What is a fast way to earn pony tokens without purchasing them? I am curious because I want to become a premium member.

There are three ways to earn pony tokens on this game (technically four, but once the intro-tutorial is completed, it's gone). These three ways are quests, leveling up and local shows.
Quests will get you limited tokens as well as experience and moneys. Most of these take both time and a bit of luck to achieve.
Leveling up will earn you increasing amounts of tokens and money as well as a refill of your accrued days. If you're still young in levels, this is probably the quickest way to gain tokens (as long as you remember to save them).
Once your levels start climbing, the quickest way to earn tokens will be your local shows. Remember that you'll earn a random day and a random token at what appears to be random times when you compete in the locals. However, you will earn your random extras more often when you hit more first places and your random extras will appear more often when you compete at the highest level your horse can compete at. What does this mean? It means you should balance the first place wins with a mix of seconds and below where you will pull at least 1 win per every three or four not-wins. Of course this will also depend on the horse. Some pull in better placements than others. And, if you take the time to train up your horse, it seems to help in both top-level locals, placements (and perhaps also more extras, but that's entirely relative to how you see your own horse perform before training and after).
Some of us seem to earn tokens faster in local shows than others.
