What colour is this guy?

Post by Wild_Brumby »

I found this stud and I'm confused by his colouring.
When you look at his gallery he was born a chestnut. Could this be a very heavy sooty taking over?

I definitely think Sooty now. I have a palomino filly out of him who is going black across her back. I didn't think of mealy. Going through his foals (which I didn't think of until now) there are a lot with mealy.
Thanks for the replies guys :D

This horse is chestnut affected with pangare and heavy sooty expression.
The reason he looks 'gray' is because of an old bug that's since been corrected. There are a few of these still hanging around. If you look at his yearling gallery photo, you will see clearly that he is a very bright chestnut with pangare. By 4 years, he's already darkened a bit and now at 12 years, he's considerably darker. This progressive darkening is indicative of the sooty gene. He may continue to darken until he's black in color.

None of his foals grey. The only ones that are got the grey from their mothers. Grey lightens not darkens. I have a palomino filly from him who's crazy dark along her back.
