with the old gelding (when i got him he was in his twenties) we used to have to put foal pads on him then very think saddle blankets because he had the very spiny back where his spine was visable and there was no meat to even his back out so if you rode him bareback, you had the spine against your croch and butt. but we used to have to put foam pads and very think saddle blankets just to put a saddle on him

he had back problems as well to go with that spine that killed. he hated me on his back when bareback, yet let my mum ride him bareback. the mare i had couldnt care less and unlike the gelding, she had a flat back with a slight dip in where the spine was and i can tell you this, riding her bareback was so much comfier
