Smoky sable pearl? Buckskin pearl?

Post by Prometheus Stables »

PS Ashtoreth

Adoption center NAB here. She has a palomino son from a bay dad, so there's definitely some cream involvement.

From Totina's color guide, she seems between the smoky sable pearl (brown + cream + pearl): http://photobucket.com/gallery/user/Tot ... Zw==/?ref=

and the buckskin pearl: http://photobucket.com/gallery/user/Tot ... bmc=/?ref=

in shade... she seems closer to the sable, but the dark on her legs makes me think bay base coat vs brown. Maybe a dark buckskin pearl? Maybe sooty?? Idk.

I'd have to go with Buckskin Pearl. The mane is too chocolaty to be regular Perlino, I think.

She's a sooty perlino. The dark mane and tail (as well as dark shading along the body) are caused by the sooty gene. If you look at the mane on her colt you can see some sooty shading starting to show through on him. Another perlino indicator are her bright blue eyes. Cream/pearl mixes also have technically "blue" eyes, but their blue shows as more of a gray-ish color rather than the obvious blue on this girl. Her legs are also too dark for a cream/pearl.

For reference, this horse is a buckskin pearl roan. So her body is slightly lighter than without the roan but otherwise is very typical of the coloring.

And here is a perlino from Totina's guide, minus sooty.

Pearl isn't my forte, I'll have to admit.

It's a tricky little bugger. Likes to pretend it's other things. I did a lot of experimentation with it, and it still gets me at times. Its indicators can be very difficult to find.

What I have found, though, is that a lot of people like to jump straight to pearl as an explanation for a strange color when the truth is actually much less "exciting." I used to do the same thing but have become much more skeptical after my experiments. In general (AC included) there is a lot more cream running around than pearl. Pearl also tends to have less variance in its expression than cream does; a smaller range of shades that it can be, etc. It's very fun to play around with. :)
