Crossbreeding

Post by Shamrock »

Okay so I have a question about crossbreeding to get new breeds! :)
So let's say i want to breed a Cleveland Bay which is Thoroughbred x [ Arabian x NAB ] I believe. Does the SIRE have to be the one represented to the right? Which means the Arab x NAB? Like does it matter which parent is what cross/breed? :) Or could i have a Arab x NAB mare and cross her with a TB stallion?

It doesn't matter which cross is the sire or dam both will work.

I'm not really sure what you are asking. Sometimes you can get a new breed on one try, sometimes it takes many tries. It just depends which genes the parents pass on to the foal, and if that foal fits within the new breed's guidelines.

Soooo if I try and breed an Exmoor ( Prez x Tarp ) and I bred it as a Tarp x Prez that doesn't matter? I didn't get the Exmoor on that try.

So it does NOT matter what side the sire/dam is on?

Correct. Does NOT matter which gender is which breed. As long as your recipe is correct. Keep trying.

Not every mating will result in a new breed. The foal must also meed the minimum requirements as listed in the breed book. If you Evaluate the foal using the Exmoor book, you should see which category he failed to meet.

It's also a good idea to Evaluate both the sire and dam as an Exmoor to see how well they meet the criteria. If they are both 3 or 4 stars then continue to breed them and you'll have a good chance of the foal inheriting the correct genes.
