When to Color Type?
I'm not sure if this is the correct bored for this, but here goes. I know foals can change color drastically as they age. Given that, at what age do you recommend color typing your horses?

You can always change what you've entered, so there's really no need to wait. Also, with practice you can rather easily determine your foal's adult coat from its newborn coat. It takes a lot of time invested to tell the small differences - especially for things like the difference between a bay baby coat and a brown one - but is definitely doable.flrancho wrote:I'm not sure if this is the correct bored for this, but here goes. I wonder though, exactly what you meant. So I'm offering this answer to perhaps clarify your question.
A foal blows their foal coat AT one year.
There are only a couple genes on this game that makes a horse 'change color' as they age. They are Sooty (it can make a horse darken with age), Varnish (it can make a horse lighten with age and is connected to the appaloosa patterns), and Gray (sometimes marked as graying, the horse gray's out into a fleabitten coat or a solid gray coat as they age).
As of right now... I think these are the only genes that actually make changes to the coat. I have had a couple dilutes born that between 4 years and 7 years, they go from a base, gold-like color to a really bright almost cream-like gold (like they carry metallic, which could have been the case), but those three genes above, are all that effects a coat as a horse ages.
I'm sure if I missed something, I'll be corrected.
