What color is this guy?

Post by asen2316 »

Stormy Skies

I can tell that he has a black base and possibly a roan gene, but after that I'm stuck.

What did he look like a a foal? I'm leaning towards maybe greying mealy brown due to the pangere on his belly

Looks like a dun brown. He has the gray gene, which means he will turn gray over time.

Greying smoky brown. Dun is a little hard to tell, the ankle flushing can be caused by the grey gene (in this stage) as well as the dun gene. I don't see any other prominent indicators of dun and the foal is also not dun. So the dun gene is questionable.

Unfortunately he was from the AC, so I don't know what he would've looked like as a foal. Greying brown seems accurate, though.

That sounds correct. Thank you!

I'm pretty sure this horse has cryptic dun. The overall tone is a bit pale and greenish. His foal also looks cryptic dun to me. I've developed an eye for it from trying to avoid it in my Arabians.
I also checked Totina's guide and the photo for a smoky dun brown looks exactly like this horse here, minus the gray.
Here is a regular cream brown without dun to compare.

She's a very warm brown.

Another but without silver

Thanks for this addition. I think you may be correct about the cryptic dun. The more I look at the filly, the more she looks like a near-perfect match for the "dunskin" image in Totiana's guide.

Entirely possible it has dun. What I'm saying is that I don't see any indications for it or that the grey is hiding what I would normally look for. The dun will change a black coat more toward the gray spectrum, but the grey genes also does that. So, I can't confirm the dun.

It is simply unknown. Should you pop a dun horse with an AC arab match, then you will be certain. :D

I believe I have solved the mystery of the hidden dun gene. This is his foal with a wild bay, non-dun Arabian AC mare:

A lovely dunskin colt

If you look closely at his neck, you can see faint dun stripes. If you look REALLY closely at Stormy's front left leg, you can barely see dun stripes there too.

More obvious now that he's greyed out a little more

Thank you to everyone for your assistance!
