When is a horse unable to compete?

Is it as soon as they turn 20 or 21?

I think it's as soon as they turn 20. If you try to enter them in comps, they won't list in your horses for competition. I don't remember what happens if you try to go to competitions from the horse's profile page.
But this doesn't extend to local shows. You can continue to use local shows for as long as the horse is still around.
