Able to change measurement to CM and KG

Post by GrimCamel »

Since I am a lazy European that does not measure their horses in hands in their country I would like to be able to change this in some form of settings. If you already can then tell me where ;__;
Anyway since I am not much for math I dont go on a calculator every time I want to know stats such as weight or height for my horse I just use eye measurements comparing to the player woman which from what I've heard are a bit tall?? So idk. A setting for us europeans that use centimeters (or meters) and kilograms would be a blessing. Thanks

Yes! Except where I am we use hands and kilograms... So maybe individual settings for both?

This doesn't really effect me much, but here are my attempts to make your lives easier...

The hand to centimeter conversion is a little more than 10 cm to a hand. Therefore, a horse that is 0-6hh converts to 0 to 60 centimeters. Since it is a little more than 10 cm, once it goes beyond that point, 7-12hh converts to approximately 71 to 121 centimeters (add 1 centimeter). Then, from 13-18hh you add 2 to get 132 to 182 centimeters. After that you add 3 centimeters from 19 to 24hh to get 193 to 243 centimeters. At 25hh you get exactly 254 centimeters.

To sum up:
0-6hh is 0-60 centimeters
7-12hh is 71-121 centimeters
13-18hh is 132-182 centimeters
19-24hh is 193-243 centimeters
25hh is exactly 254 centimeters

This also works for decimals too. So if you have a horse that is 13.3hh, it's 133+2 = 135 centimeters (plus a bunch of decimals to get the exact, but if you wanted to be that precise you can always look it up).

For pounds to kg... I ran out of steam to do an in-depth, precise answer for this one, sorry. x'D But basically, the ratio is roughly 1:2 (kg to pounds). So a horse that is 2000 lbs is a little less than 1000kgs (techincally, it's 907 kgs because the ratio is more like 1:2.2, but it'll let you get an idea of where it's around).

I hope this helps a little! x'D

You still have to do a lot of math. If we ignore most of that adding a cm every so many hands, it's not too bad to just add the zeroes, and you really won't be too far off on the height. But with weight, you have to divide by 2.2 or your numbers are way off. In that example, you're off by nearly 100 kilos. Which is a lot.

I'd love to have the option to change this, mostly because I think hands are a dumb system of measurement and centimeters make sense. Being in the US, I'm used to pounds, although I prefer kilograms.

I would very much like this as well. I tried for some time to write the horses' height in cm in their descriptions once they was grown up but I eventually gave it up since it was just adding even more work to keep track of my horses' stats.
It would definitely make more sense to me as a european to use the measurements that is most commonly used here. Kilograms and meters are by the way used in scientific measurements all over the world, even if the rest of society (in some places at least) still hold on to the old ways, where hand, feet and inch are based on the human anatomy, which is not a precise way of measurement since humans do not look exactly the same.

Thank you all for your support! And thanks Devolare for trying to help us out. In the meantime I guess I will have to look back on this thread and use my brain to measure heights x)

I find this fascinating. I thought the 'hands high' (hh) measurement was pretty universal for horses around the world.

13.5 hh doesn't exist. It would either be 13.2 hh (13 and 1/2 hands high) or 14.1 hh (13 hh plus 5 inches). I'm starting to think this difference in measuring is why we see so many odd horse ads in the U.S. stating the horse is 14.5 hh or 14.8 hh.
