What defines a champion horse?

What defines a champion horse, is it the amount you've earned in winnings or is it the number of times you've placed near the top?

As a horse is placed in competitions they will begin to earn points depending on their placement. Titles are then awarded as a horse collects a certain amount of points per competition.
