What colors are these horses?
Hello everyone! I bought a gorgeous mare from another player a while ago and have since then bred her to a few different studs. I am having a really hard time telling what colors her and her foals are though, and would really appreciate some help!
Fawn

This is the mare I bought. I'm pretty sure her base color is bay, but I have no idea what kinds of dilutions she has.
EH Piper

This is the first foal I have from her. She started out as a kind of weird, almost pink color. Once again, I have no idea what dilutions she has.
EH Pontus

I think this one is a dunskin, but I'm not completely sure. The dun doesn't really show with how light he is, but his sire is a tarpan from the AC so I think he's guaranteed to be dun.
EH Melody

This one is out of EH Piper. She also has this really intense red color, but I still think she's a bay. Not completely sure though.
I have only played the game for about a month, but I find the color genetics' side of things incredibly interesting, so I'd love some help identifying the colors of these horses!

Fawn appears to be a palomino pangare Lp (leopard complex).Emiisheartless2 wrote: ↑Tue Jan 07, 2025 11:15 am Hello everyone! Piper is a bay pangare Lp. That light pink color is from pangare.

Pontus is indeed a dunskin. He also has pangare and Lp. And yes, any foals from an AC tarpan will be guaranteed to have dun.
Melody is a silver bay Lp.
The best times to take pictures for the gallery for color identification will be as a newborn and as a yearling. When working with Lp, the coat gets altered in a LOT of different ways and can make horses that are one color (example: chestnut) appear to be other colors (example: bay). Lp isn't the only color that this can happen with. Sooty can make horses appear differently and champagne can also alter base colors making them look like another gene combination. And it doesn't end there.

Re: What colors are these horses?
So all of these horses are getting extra effects from both Lp and sooty, meaning that in order to determine their actual color you need to look at their coat at 1 year old, before the other effects really start affecting them. (So, in future, be sure to take pictures when the horse turns 1 for the best shot at deciphering their color.)
Fawn is Palomino - chestnut + 1x cream + pangare. She also has pangare (causing her lower areas to be lighter at first), a snowcap pattern (2x Lp gene, causing her blanket and the "cloudiness" on her colored areas as she ages) and heavy sooty on her lower extremities as she ages, making them progressively darker. From her offspring, we can deduce that she carries a hidden Tiger Eye gene.
Piper is a Mealy Bay Dun with Tiger Eye - bay + dun + pangare + 2x Tiger Eye. So she's a bay base with the dun dilution, pangare (again causing the lighter undersides), and two tiger eye genes (she needs two for the tiger eye to show without champagne). She also has a snowcap pattern, and thus 2 copies of Lp.
Pontus is a Mealy Buckskin Dun, though the mealy and dun effects mild. That's bay + 1x cream + dun + pangare. The dun effect can mostly be seen in his two-year-old picture if you look at his ankles - the light spot on the back is caused by his dun. He only has one copy of Lp, giving him a hip blanket pattern and heavy varnishing.
Melody is a Silver Bay - bay + silver. The silver is what causes the light mane, tail, and lower legs. She also has a snowcap pattern caused by two copies of Lp.

Re: What colors are these horses?
Thank you both so much for your answers! I have moved on to another line now, and am once more trying to figure out the colors of a few horses.
EH Barret
is, I think, a chestnut dun? The slight darkening just above the hoof and the brown-ish mane are throwing me off a bit though. Is it possible he's a wild bay? I struggled with identifying his parents as well, so I don't really have any clues from them. I have a few other horses with similar coloring, but I though he was a pretty good example.
EH Esme
has pretty much the same coloring, but I feel like her mane is even darker. I would assume she is the same color as EH Barret though.
EH Lane
is a bay, but I don't know whether or not she is dun. Both of her parents are, but since dun is dominant it is possible they both only had a single allele. I do think it looks like her upper legs are partly striped though, so I'm just not sure!
Lastly, I think EH Danny
is a dunskin, but I'm kind of doubting my own judgement after staring at him for too long. He definitely has a cream gene, it's the dun part I'm not sure about.
I'd be really thankful if someone could help me identify the colors of these horses!
Also, I've been amazed by how welcoming and helpful this community is, it's really made getting into the game so much easier! A big thank you to everyone that have already answered all my questions, and to the creators of all the amazing guides out there!

Re: What colors are these horses?
Here you go!

EH Barret is a Wild Bay Dun Varnish Roan or E? + A+? + D? + Lplp (could end up with sooty as he ages).
The mane turning to a brownish color is caused by the leopard gene. His Sire is a Wild Bay Varnish Roan and Dam a Sooty Pangare Wild Bay Dun Varnish Roan
EH Esme is a Sooty Wild Bay Dun or E? + A+? + Sty? + D?
EH Lane is a Sooty Bay Dun or E? + A? + Sty? + D?
EH Danny is a Sooty Dunskin or E? + A? + Styn + D? + Crcr
There are a few ways to identify Dun on a horse. The easiest is the presence of dun markings on the body (striping). However usually the first sign will be a bit of a red streak that can be seen on a newborns mane like below. Dun also will cause the majority of the body to be a lighter color compared to the head and legs.

Wow, thank you! Those sooty genes really threw me off a bit, especially when paired with the dun. Those horses look almost like regular bays!

Re: What colors are these horses?
To the surprise of absolutely no one, I am once again struggling with figuring out if my horses are dun. I should be rid of the genes in a few generations, but until then, I am conducting my own "genetic testing" on my horses to check for non-dun genes. The only problem is, as I've starting introducing red into my herd, it's a bit difficult to see that red stripe in the mane...
This is the one I'm struggling with right now:
Dun?

Does his body look a bit lighter than it should without dun? I can't see any primal patterns, but is it possible he is a dun anyway? I think he's an undiluted red, but I'd really appreciate a second opinion!

He looks like a Sooty Red Dun Tobiano or ee + ? + Sty? + Dd + To?. He has a very subtle color shifting going on if you like at his legs compared to the main part of his body.Emiisheartless wrote: ↑Fri Feb 28, 2025 2:48 pm To the surprise of absolutely no one, I am once again struggling with figuring out if my horses are dun.
