Is this just champagne?

Post by isaacz »

261 Crackers

Judging by the nose freckles I think this is champagne, but I’m not sure if there’s anything else involved :?

I could be wrong because champagnes have stumped me in the past, but based on pedigree it looks like you're right about the freckles being champagne. And it looks like th ehorse also has panagre, leading to the lighter "countershading" on the horse! Pangare from mom and champagne from dad.

Looks like Gold Champagne Pangare to me. It has a chestnut base with one copy of champagne and one copy of pangare, its known genes would be: ee/nCh/nP

I'd agree with the mealy golden champagne/gold champagne pangaré theory. The champagne is pretty obvious cause foals with be born with lighter eyes and pink skin and later, (the severity is depending on if there's additional genes for cream - very pale - or pearl - very heavy) freckles covering the nose and on the lower lid of the eyes (cause there you'd also see pink/dark skin usually).

That said, I'd also add that I'm pretty sure they've got varnish from LP (from the granddads side) cause the mild varnish does also apply to the dad and did brighten even the areas spared by the pangaré. In addition, cause i like to gather all indicators, they've got a Tobiano (the stocking outline is barely visible on the rightside front leg) gene from the dam.

That mane does make me wonder though; it's pretty light even considering the usual colouring for champagnes...the sire had a pure white as well; so I'm also somewhat liable to think your horse also got flaxen there
so full genotype prob:
Varnished mealy flaxen golden champagne with Tobiano
e/e A? Ch/n fl/fl? P/p Lp/lp TO/n

Thank you for the in-depth explanation! She turned into a very pretty pale peach-y color and I’m currently breeding her to try and get some foals that turn out the same!

Edit: she also popped a similar foal that proves the presence of tobiano with her double stockings (thank you, Nazarach!)

Bright Beam

Purchased this handsome young lad for his similarity to Sweet Cherry as a foal! Is his color the same as well (excluding the appaloosa pattern) or could there be anything different at play here?

Actually the sire is just flaxen gold champagne. His lightening with age is due to the champagne gene, not Lp. The horse in question is the same, just with the addition of some very loud pangare. :)

This one is a gold champagne with Lp and hetero tiger eye. So chestnut base plus the champagne gene, one tiger eye gene, and one Lp gene. It does not have the flaxen or the pangare that the other had.
