Need advice (Endurance project)

Post by Oriole »

Hi! I am frustrated with my current projects, so I am here to ask for advice.
I don’t know if my horses are good for Endurance (on paper I mean, without comp testing), I’d been getting some nice BRs lately, but their conformation is quite disappointing. So my main question is, should I continue breeding good BR to good BR, or should I focus on confo first? Am I doing something wrong, or should I just have more patience? Which foals/horses would you cull? And finally, should I abandon this project and switch to something else?
My highest stamina comment is “This colt has extraordinary amount of endurance” and highest stamina confo is 59 (but that’s probably an accident, normally they have 40-50 stamina points).
I keep my stallions here:
https://www.horseworldonline.net/farm/barn/205627
https://www.horseworldonline.net/farm/pasture/159438
Mares here (my best ones have all passed on, unfortunately):
https://www.horseworldonline.net/farm/barn/206935
https://www.horseworldonline.net/farm/pasture/157576
And new foals here:
https://www.horseworldonline.net/farm/barn/206934
Any help is appreciated!

I am currently unable to get deep into this. My PC is again in for repairs.

But from just taking a quick look over your horses, I can say that your COI may have disabled most upward ability and you may be at this point, creating carbon copies. COI may be your issue. If you have the same-same when you breed a set of parents, then all you're going to get, is more of the same-same. Not because you don't have good stock, but because you've bred yourself into a particular look, conformation, build, etc.

IF this is not the case (and you've just been using horses with high COI and are not inbreeding your herd), then the high COI may still be a contributing factor. So it's still something to keep in mind.

Since you're already into the 60's HGP, at this point, you need to start breeding for the competition and stop breeding for on-paper. What this'll mean is that you'll need to figure out a best and easiest testing regime for you that you can tell how the foals are most likely to develop within their discipline.
Some people can use the locals to help guide their breeding and culling practices, I found that training them up and testing them within the actual discipline using hosted shows is my most straightforward option.
When you've decided your best method of testing, then you return to breeding the best scores with the best scores.

Thank you, this really helps.
I inbreed a lot 'cause I prefer to keep my projects small, I rarely use outside studs and don't sell my retired horses at all (I don't want their name and description to be changed). I'm afraid if stop doing this, I'll end up with a bunch of retited but relatively young mares and studs I have no space for.
I've read a guide (I forgot which one, sorry) and wanted to try to test my new foals with the same poor weight and bombproof temperament after they reach 5 y.o.
Ah, this reminded me that also most of my horses have a body type of 20-30% (most Endurance horses I've seen have less %). May this be a part of the problem which doesn't let me to reach higher stamina comments?

I don't recall what stamina is connected to (body conformation) offhand. What I can say is that arabians have quite a nice endurance makeup, so I would say (without the notes on my pc) to definitely aim for an arab conformation. So, one of those would be, less body type.

There are those of us out there, nominally senior members, that will take in age-outs only without changing any names or owner's notes. So it's still an option for you, from time to time. I'd suggest aiming for those that fly through their years. (Or even me, when I'm actively playing, sometimes the only things I change, is to add into the notes 'age out' in addition to what's already there). Just have to let them know that the names and notes are important to you.

Also, you can manually check where stamina affects most areas by looking over your horses and eyeing up where the stamina moves, in relation to Actually, you can't do that. You aren't upgraded so you can't see the sliding bars. Had you been upgraded, the bars would help you in this case. Just seeing the number can get you a little further, but seeing the bars would help you in addition to that.

But you don't need to. Do the testing, this is your best bet, even if you were upgraded, this is still the path you should take. 8-)

Will do! I have also upgraded my second account (Oriole2), hopefully this will help me too.

Thank you so much ❤️
