Discord instead of AJAX

Post by GrimCamel »

So I noticed HWO do not have its own in site chat but are using this AJAX extension I never heard of. Very old school looking program with text only chat, seems like a very temporary solution and probably is, I have not asked. Anyway, I was online a while yesterday and started talking about discord in there as another solution so I thought why not share it. I understand you would probably add a chat to the website some time in the future but this could be another temporary solution. Discord is completely free, even to host a server and is easy to understand and updated regularly. Its mostly constructed to replace Teamspeak3 and Skype in gaming purpose but other sites and communities have started to use it as a gathering place (For example ive seen the nexus mods sites use this and a few facebook pages/groups). It runs smoothly with little use of RAM and can be used both in your web browser, desktop or even on your phone.

Here is a picture of the desktop version with just a quick overview of the server me and a friend of mine admin together. You can assign every visitor a role or not. Since our server is private we have assigned all our community members (while unassigned members can not use voice chat) as the role members which you can see the few 11 which are online during the time. Roles as Officer is also visible which is just a section of "helpers" which can access things like the officer text and voice chat which is perfect for admin purpose. You can create tons and tons of voice chats and text chats, ours being sorted after topics for those who do not want to get the sound notification on subjects they are not interested in, its easy to just mute that certain chat which will look grayed out like the #spam chat on the picture. If members are being offensive while admin is not online, other members can simply right click their name in voice chat and mute them, or block them in the text chat. I'm not even sure if the admins of this site would be interested in a voice chat for their members but its useful for them at least, collecting their staff in an unseen chat to discuss admin things w/o the need of adding them as friends because yes discord have a private message function and voice chat but Im not gonna showcase that since its not relevant. You can pin messages just like in forums for example rules etc and as shown in the picture you can just copy any picture of the internet and paste it in the chat. I've done this many times with horses and it works splendid. No files are saved on your computer either. Links to youtube, vine, etc can be played directly in the chat. Those active in the text chat can post reaction emojis on pictures and posts like seen in the picture above (Even tho the reaction is blurred because its a bit nsfw). Admins can even upload their own emojis, which is what i've done with the reaction one which shall not be named. If users have offensive usernames/nicknames and you're are not able to access them due to them being offline or afk etc, you can as an admin force change their nicknames to something else (perfect troll as well ;)) For offline monitoring admins can even register a bot on the server, I am not that much into it since our bot is basically just a minigame one which does not do any admin related stuff but I am aware that such functions is in this specific bot's settings.
I just manage this small 50 ppl community and are not part of anything else (as you can se to the left where the server icon is) so I have no experience of managing something bigger but I do know discord are used for such things. Discord being as accessible as it is I am no longer myself using skype, TS3 or even the community's facebook group since its all so easy to set up in discord.

I would very much like see Admin consider this instead of Ajax :) A discord server is as easy to link to as it is to your AJAX server ^^

I saw this when it was first posted. I'm quite familiar with Discord. We can't just switch to Discord for a number of technical reasons, though they did recently release an API that I was investigating for another project. If it suites our needs we may move to it in the future.
