Roan Horse Drawing
Does anyone have some advice on drawing roan horses? I just drew a horse and now I'm planning to color it with colored pencils. Is there a base color that I should brush over first? I don't know whether I'll draw a red roan or blue roan yet.
I looked up the base color for roan and the answer online was white, but I wasn't so sure about that. Anyway, white is the color of my paper already.
Thank you!

Drawing is... preferential... I suppose.Diamond Filly wrote:Does anyone have some advice on drawing roan horses? I just drew a horse and now I'm planning to color it with colored pencils. But roan is defined as 'any color interspersed with white hairs'. But as far as genetics are concerned, the base color of a blue roan, is black. So that would be a black base with white hairs throughout. Red Roan (although I always think of it as chestnut, the color Red Roan is a bay base), would be red base (red hairs) interspersed with white hairs.
Strawberry Roan is chestnut horses.
That said... coloring such a thing in would be a bit more difficult. If it were on the computer, I'd suggest laying down your base (black for a blue roan, for instance) and then using a layer to create the same coat in white and then using opacity (or translucence) to about 50% and seeing how that looks.
Eh... I'm not an artist.
