Until registries are in place the Breeding Communities forum will be for players to work together towards creating or improving their favourite breeds.
Forum rules
Each breed may have only one topic. The first post in the topic is to be informative. It should help explain the breed, and breeding goals; advice on how to select mares and stallions; and links to ideal Stallions available for breeding.
Keeping a directory of breeders working on the same goal is also helpful.
All new threads must be approved.

v casually breeding minis, any tips?

Post by prplebird20 »

So right now my two main projects are big horses with fluffy (or mohawk) manes and I also have a barn of (kinda) small horses

my current smallest horse is this girl

but my tactic is to find the smallest and cheapest stud and breed my mares with them, which doesn't seem the most productive. Is there any other things I could try?
(my next step after this is to breed fallabella into these horses)

AC Shetlands tend to be fairly short, over a few generations you could probably breed them down :)
Also, I have a pretty decent number of large shetlands if you want some! Quite a few retired mares, I can also set aside some larger dud foals

You can also try mini arabs and mini tb's, both of these (is my memory sharp in this?) are used to create a falabella.

Oh... my memory is only half sharp!
Mini tb's are falabella. Mini arabs are just for fun. ;)

But there may be some in stud or for sale.
Try looking just for height requirements in the sales search and stud search. And try applying 4 years and older, this will wean out any birth-heights. Since it's 'current' height that the search goes through.

BlackOak2 said above that you could try mini tbs and arabs, and that there might be some for sale. I am, in fact, selling a smallish TB stud that matured to be a little taller than I liked, and if you want to try breeding mini TBs you could try starting with him. Most normal sized mares bred to mini stallions have smaller foals (in my experience).

If you do buy the below horse, please don't remove the brand that he carries. Thank you!
