A gentle or early expression of the Sooty gene is causing the grey in the mane. In this particular horse the Sooty travels over the neck and withers and down the front leg, hence the tail being untouched. I say gentle or early expression as it darkens with age and may yet become more expressive.

Gorgeous Dunliano by the way. Sooty Dunlianos are one of my favorites.
