Re: Retirement Function for Bred Horses

Will there be AI eventually in the game? Embryo transfer or ovum flushing? (I do hope so, that'd be an awesome feature for upgraded players)

If so, it's probable people would collect and store before their horses were too old to produce or before they died. Whatever base info you use for creating offspring would be necessary.

I'd imagine that may be a lot of info, you might consider having a general expiration date for semen/egg/embryo so you're not having to keep that info for ever.

I asked that a few months back, Des, here was Larrisa's response.

I'm assuming decreased fertility with age will be a feature, so collecting semen or eggs from old horses would be ill advised, but it would be good for younger horses.

Semen, eggs, and embryos can be kept frozen indefinitely if they're maintained correctly, so an expiration date would not be exactly appropriate.

I realize that an expiration is not quite realistic, I suggested that part thinking breeding info might take up a lot of extra space. if someone has a straw from a stallion for 10 real life years, which could equate to a thousand plus year old straw (game years) it seems a little unnecessary to still have said straw or the need to keep all the breeding info for the stallion. Depending how everything's coded and stored.

Not everything from real life is going to translate perfectly to a game. It's not always going to be feasible.

This I love, I do hope that's thrown in there too. Id imagine that might get a bit complex though... [idea for game possibility] perhaps at collection you could either get a "viable" collection or not - and so waste a chunk of money with nothing to show for it or be successful.

I would love to see AI sometimes be successful and sometimes not... the way it works in RL with multiple inseminations being needed to result in single pregnancy. The same general way pasture breeding used to work on HWO 2-ish years ago (at new day rollover, your newsfeed would announce if a mare was bred overnight, sometimes one rollover would work, sometimes it was more like 12).

I know there has been talk of different disasters and injuries... freezer thaw would be a horrific and awesome one at the same time. Or damage to "x" amount of straws or something similar.

Most of this would be far more complex than any horse game Ive seen yet, I know. I could certainly understand if its too complex to add to the game just yet (if ever, even).

I would assume the the when it took 12 turns, fertility was an issue. Pasture breeding has a very high conception rate, with reports of up to 90% conception, with the horses generally running together for about two months (anecdotally, there was one man who ran a stallion with mares for just one month and had an 87% conception rate.)

Release Into The Wild or similar

Post by Paradiss »

I know that when you rehome a horse, it gets deleted from the game.

Now, if I breed a mare to get better lines and I want to get rid of her, can't simply release her or something?
Instead of getting deleted, maybe make a pool or place called, I don't know, maybe forest or the wild, so the horse would still exist but we wouldn't have to be stuck with it. Horses with red traits don't get sold and take precious space.

I don't know if anything similar is planned o.o

I support that. Early retirement would be an option. I don't want to sell my mares/stallions I don't breed with anymore because I don't want them to be rehomed or their names changed. So early retirement would be an nice option to have.

This game is supposed to be realistic. Randomly releasing horses into the wild would be weird and terribly irresponsible. Besides, that's an HEE thing that is frankly a bit ridiculous. That being said, I've spoken to Larissa a number of times about an option for removing bred horses, and it is my understanding that this will not be added. Feuer's concern of horses being rehomed is unfounded because you cannot rehome a bred horse (if you're worried about them being resold, that's a possibility, however) and eventually we'll have registries and you'll be able to give your horses permanent names.

I see. Thanks for the reply.

Obviously, sending them to the wild is stupid. But perhaps sending them to a "rescue"? Maybe it could work like the adoptions page?
