What can I do to change my boring prez?

Post by likeit2 »

Hey all!
I've been working with prez on and off for a while now and I keep stopping because not only is it difficult to breed from ac they tend to be so BORING looking I was wondering if any of you HWO color geniuses could help me out. I don't want to mix the line with other lines or breeds but is there a way to enhance their coloration? change it slightly to increase my chances of getting a different color? if not I might drop the line (again:?) for one a bit more interesting and rewarding. Thank you for taking the time to read/respond have a great day! :) -likeit

One way I can think of is to test your studs with a Chestnut of another breed to check if they're heterozygous or homozygous duns. You can rehome the offspring if you want, but studs can produce a lot of foals, especially if they're only aged when their energy is entirely used up.

If you breed a stud ten times, for instance, then around 5/10 should be non-Dun if your horse is heterozygous. Even just one non-Dun foal would prove it's genes, though, and if 0/10 are non-Dun then I'd imagine it'd be safe to say it's homozygous for Dun.

You can also use a Chestnut to test if the stud has one or two Black genes, and you can use a Black to test if a stud has one or two Agouti genes. You'd do the same as the above process and note if you get any Chestnut or Red Duns from the Chestnut, or Black or Grulla Duns from the Black.

You can do this with mare Prez's too, just note their ages as you do so as they're much more limited with their offspring.

If you get some non-Dun foals, then you can possibly use that stud with a similar mare to get a non-Dun Prez. It might just be a long process of checking and rechecking your horses' genes and breeding accordingly.

I'm not super familiar with whether or not Prez's tend to be full Dun or one gene, though. I think they tend to be Wild Bay / Bay Duns in the AC for the most part. I don't think they carry Seal, nor do they normally get any Snowflakes or Tobiano without crossbreeding, sadly, and I think Silverine was doing a study on whether or not there's Tobiano Suppression genes via breeds such as Prez's. I'm not sure what they've concluded with that as of yet, though.

You might be able to find some that have only one Agouti gene and get some Grullas, or some that only have one Extension gene and get Red Duns. I don't think they have dilution genes from the AC, though, so the best that you can get without crossbreeding some colors in might be Chestnuts, Red Duns, Blacks, Grulla (Grullo) Duns, and (Wild) Bays, and (Wild) Bay Duns.
