A bay is an agouti color (along with brown and wild bay) and also can only 'show' when applied to a black extension (either single E/e or double E/E). Chestnut is e/e.

So your horse has the ability to produce the black base (either E/e or E/E) but we don't know whether he has a single bay agouti (A/-) a double bay, or a single bay with a single brown (A/At).

So he does have the potential, theoretically, but he also may never do so, depending on exactly what agouti he has paired. Breeding to a black mare would give you the best chances of popping a black foal. And if he produces a red you'll know he's an E/e and if he produces a brown, you'll know he's an A/At.

Hope I didn't confuse you too much! 8-)

Best cross? That'll be what you're looking for.

I have found that arabians and belgians cross for competitions (low level with AC stock) really quite remarkably well. Good foundation competition stock.

I haven't worked too much with forests, but if you want to avoid the really heavy body type, then crossing the forest to an arabian might come out in a similar competition-foundation type cross like the belgian and the arabian.

You can find black arabians, but they're a tad rare. :D

Caspians might be an interesting combo too, but caspians have only so many uses in recipe breeds, so again, I haven't worked with them.

On another side note, this link shows the breeds that use the forest horse in the recipe, it might offer you some interesting thoughts as well:

The list is on the right. Personally, the Avelignese, the Byelorussian Harness Horse, the Shire and the Zhemaichu always sparked my interests. You may find some others are more intriguing to you.

I breed for Hunter, Driven Dressage, and Obstacle Driving. I'd like to refine them a bit, ultimately have a group of exceptional Part/Half Forest horses excelling in Hunter and Driving. Not really wanting to breed for a new breed like the ones in the wiki

I thought about using Turkmene, but idk how well that would cross.
I'll test a couple of my mares out on Arabs, NABs, and Turks

For those disciplines, you'll want to aim for a medium horse, medium pony type. So I'd suggest the NAB or actually, you may want to take a closer look at the prze horses. They may have just the genes you're looking for, without too much additional breeding/culling work.

Arabians and turks will favor too much light horse and you'll need to work on pulling the build back into the medium range.

But, like we do enjoy saying around here, on this game, you can make any breed into any discipline you want.

I am officially confused by this colt lol. he look sooty dun, but has no dun marks.
he comes out of the mare I was questioning about dunskin. she has some dun marks, but this colt doesn't, they look really similar, except his mom is a little lighter

He is probably not a dun (thanks to his father) - he did get (a lot) of his dams pangaré/mealy though. Pg will brighten/fade/cover the red areas of a horse - from just the warm spots up to nearly full body coverage (in the red areas) depending on how far it'll spread. As your colt already should've shed his foal coat, we can be pretty sure he'll keep this pg coverage; the sooty from his father though might make him darken again over the years though.

Hope this helped :)
