Help with some Champagnes?

Post by EclipticEnd »

Champagnes have always been my weakest link and that is still holding up, so I'd appreciate some help with these guys. I've put guesses down on some but I'm not certain, and a friend also has a Champagne that they're still not sure about color-wise that's similar to some of mine; maybe you'll be able to identify that one as well?

This one's their horse:
Constellation

My best guess is either a Sable Cream, but he doesn't really match either color from examples that I've seen. All I know is there's probably a cream because of the speckles being diluted, and the eyes are brown so there's probably not a cream/pearl situation going on.

Here's mine:
[E] Echoes of Orion

I have no idea if this is a variant of Classic or a Sable or something else; earlier pictures looked somewhat like there was some yellow at the stomach and chest like a Sable, but now the coloration looks more smoothed out (which may be because of varnishing perhaps?) so I'm not sure.

Apologies for the slow response. :D
Sometimes we miss a topic. ;)

Constellation is an amber cream. A sable cream is on a brown base and an amber cream is on a bay. If he were sable, his colors would be reversed and he'd have a change along his stomach, like a brown does, or like you'd see with pangare.

Echoes is an classic champagne. That's champagne on black. With snowflakes. The reason she doesn't look like you expect is because of the varnish from Lp. It can really change these looks a lot, even as younger foals.

That's alright. :)

Thanks for the help! Constellation just wasn't matching the examples we've seen because of his mane and the Varnish on Echoes really tripped me up.

Yeah, the dilution genes sometimes can do weird tricks to the colors. But also, using the mane and tail colors can be a great help to figuring out which is which.
When you're confused about a color in the future, try to take a step back and first deciding the base colors and what it is most likely not. Usually while you're working through that (and you have some experience with colors) you'll generally stumble upon the color the horse actually is.

However, you're doing great! It just takes time and working with the colors for the experience to build. Sometimes working with the gene write-up can be a great way to train the eye as well. And for that, working with a new line of known horse genes is best, for that type of training. For instance, all tarpans are bay duns, so they're genes will always be E/E for extension and A/A for bay... I think they may have wild bay as well, so maybe A/A, A+/A+ or A+/A... I'd have to double check on that agouti extension... Anyway, starting with a known genetic makeup can enlighten the mind's eye to the range of colors something can attain to. I'd recommend starting with a flat black AC parent. Breed it to a flat chestnut at least twice and see if a red pops out. If red does, then you have an E/e. If it doesn't then the black is an E/-
Unknown second gene.

...

Well... that's different from your current project. :D
Anyway, you need any more aid, let us know. And thanks for reminding us we missed yours! 8-)
