Height
So when i'm breeding horses, seomtimes I breed a 17h horse to a 17h horse and i get a rlly short foal. I've checked the pedigree and none of the horses are short. How idd i get a short foal and why???? Is it to do with genes or somethign? And si there a way to control the height? Also, do all horses grow at the same rate eg a 12h foal will always end up as a 20h mare/stallion (approx)?

1. Is the horse still a foal?
2. How tall is the horse currently?
3. I do know that all the horses are randomly generated
4. Have you tried breeding with an 18hh horse?

Re: Height
Very differently height-ed foals from their parents IS an indication that there is different height genes in that foals history. So, you're probably not looking back far enough.Rainbows123987! wrote:So when i'm breeding horses, seomtimes I breed a 17h horse to a 17h horse and i get a rlly short foal. Two 17 hand parents don't just have 17 hand genes. They have a range of height genes and we only see the chosen height gene that they display. So, they can actually pass on any part of their range to their foals. What this means, is if you had even a single shetland way back when the bloodline was new and you started breeding to belgians, many, many generations down the line, you could but not necessarily will produce a shortie. It all comes down to how the genes were passed on and if you successfully bred out the unwanted genes or not.
For the most part, the same newborn height will end up being the same adult height, with a discrepancy range of +/- 0.3 hands (for the taller horses). In essence, the shorter the horse, the smaller the discrepancy and the taller, the larger. For a horse born at 10.1 hands, they generally average in the range of 16.3 to 17 hands. 9.1 hands are between 15.1 and 15.2. Taller horses will have a little longer range.
If you're constantly getting foals that aren't what you want, then change the parents. If the parents are all related, add new blood.

Re: Height
The horse is currently about 1 years old (but I'll probably age her later) adn she is currently 12.3hh. I have horses up to 20hh and similar things have happened with the taller horses as well. Here is the horse im' referring to https://www.horseworldonline.net/horse/profile/3282196Emlyn wrote:I dont 100% know much about hight breeding myself but ill put my imput:Rainbows123987! wrote:So when i'm breeding horses, seomtimes I breed a 17h horse to a 17h horse and i get a rlly short foal. Re: Height
Also, when do horses tsop growing?

Re: Height
At 5 years of age.Rainbows123987! wrote:Also, when do horses tsop growing?
Most of the growth is in the first year.
Second year will give you about 2 extra thirds hh.
Third and fourth each give a third of a hand.
