What is your method of keeping track of COI's and bloodlines?

Post by Katja »

So I'm the only breeder of my breed of interest (RIP me and my unsellable foals), so I am solely responsible for keeping track of COI on my own. I thought it would be useful to ask other players how they track COI. My newest method (since I'm starting with all foundation stock) is to assign each stallion a symbol. Each of his progeny up to 3 generations out get his symbol. I'm only tracking Stallions via that method. I'm considering using naming conventions to track maternal lines. Because I'm not trying to maintain a COI of 0, but rather a COI of 15 and under (Ideally 7.5 and under), and you have space constraints, I am not following the 1 foal per horse rule that I briefly considered. I am also considering not tracking maternal lines whatsoever. But when you have 100+ horses, keeping track of individual crosses and bloodlines is a pain.

I feel this. I try really hard to keep COI % down in my Shagya arabians, which gets really tough when a lot of them are related. So I decided to start up a 0 COI % Thoroughbred line of my own horses (I'm a sucker for punishment, I guess), and so far I've been successful up to Andalusians.

See this lady and her glorious pedigree:

The way I go about doing this is by 1. using excel and planning things out and 2. by placing them into "houses." For example, a horse from say house A can breed with a horse from house B, but their offspring would go into a new house labelled AB (signifying that they are related to those in both houses A and B). I tend to use letters and numbers, which is how I end up with houses like E12D1114, but it's been working out for me so far.

Maybe just number and letter codes is the best way to go about it

Mine is not very helpful, but here goes:
I just name the foals after the parents. Everyone gets (usually) two words to their name, and I randomly pick which word gets passed down. For example, if I breed Rite as Rain to Titan Dynasty, the foal might become Rite Dynasty. It's far from perfect, but it would keep me from breeding to another horse with either "Rite" or "Dynasty" in their name (or at least check the pedigree to see how far back the common ancestor is). It also leads to some rather repetitive naming.
So, it's not great, but it at least sends up a little red flag if I notice two horses I'm about to breed have similar names. :-/
Good luck - I'm going to follow this thread and see if there are better suggestions. :)

The naming conventions was how I used to do it, but like you said, it's just not the best.

Well is it good to add my experience? I'm not really crazy about COI, but I found my growing herd hard to rule without any notes. So, I write about every breeding in sheet like that:

First line is
Stallion --- # of breeding --- Date --- In-game Date ---- Notes
Red Zeus --- 2nd ---- 27/11 ---- Y67, Winter

Second line is
Mare --- Foal's gender ---- Type --- Build
Heading --- Colt ---- Pony ---- Heavy ---- Approve or Disqualify

I can't attach an image, but it seems to be quite easy to understand. I write about every foal, its type and gender and how good it is for my goal. I can keep track of my mares too, and I immediately see stallion's quality. I use "Notes" to write additional information about retirement, mares changing and so on. I do not use Excel (I work with it so I hate to use it at home), just simple pen and paper.
