Economic Survey

Post by Argent »

I think one of the most confusing aspects of the horse market right now is how difficult it is to price horses because everyone has a different goal and there there's really no way to gauge what is reasonable based on what the typical established player can afford. I think the vast majority of horses are under priced, but I also think some of the expensive horses are hardly worth what is being asked for them. So, for the purposes of this survey, could you share the following:

1. What you look for when purchasing horses.
2. What you are willing to pay for certain attributes, both those you desire and those you do not, such as breed, color, breeders' report, conformation, performance record, or parental/offspring/relative achievements.
3. How you typically price your own horses.
4. Your current bank balance, in figures, i.e. 100k = six figures

1. Does the breed, type and bulk match my needs. Typically I need the horse to either adjust the build or add new or better genetic material to my herd. So now that would be grade, 50/50 horses or purebreds of certain breeds. I also look for solid, non-dilute horses, though it isn't exactly convenient.
2. Depends, but up to 10k probably. I would pay up to 3k for a dilute or a horse with a gp below 35k, unless there are no other quick options. I don't pay attention to the show record, conditioning or achievements. I do pay attention to the breeder's report, for example, I wouldn't pay as much for a horse who really only stands out with good tempo.
3. I rarely sell, mostly to make space or offer up a horse I won't use but somehow got hold of. Between 500 and 2,5k
4. Between five and six figures.
I miss when mowing made money.

1. I look for the breed im currently interested in. Which right now is apps or a Belgian.
2. I will pay for leopards. And must have high gp. Like 50s or above. I try to avoid Arabians because there are so many of them. I like full blooded horses to grades.
3. I rehome hundreds of horses weekly due to space. Ill try to sell something cute or with high gp that I dont want for 1$ to 5,000 usually. Older horses that can still breed i sell for 1$
4. I have over 300,000 but its a struggle to keep it there.

1. Presently, I'd be looking for a forward stifle and generally anything suitable for Working Ranch conformation wise. Bonus points for positive str/bal/agi/int.

2. The more attributes present that I am seeking, the more I'd be willing to pay. I'd pay half my holdings if it meant collecting enough traits I wanted into the same package, but the odds of this happening are slim. Anywhere from 10k-500k would be something I'd consider on a realstic basis.

3. 1k for a young horse with no training to around 10k for a horse with full training. If I felt they had the capacity to win the majority of classes entered at the highest level I would charge 50k+. If they could do better than this, ie win a world record, I wouldn't offer them for sale.

4. 7 figures.

1. I am currently training horses to compete in Marathon and Obstacle Driving.Which needs good strength. So if the horse does not have good strength,I won't take a second glance at it.I also look for the particular build of the horse. In my opinion, horses competing in Marathon and Obstacle Driving do best with Medium to Heavy Builds.

2.I would pay up to 25k if I like the horse.Usually if it has high GP,good stats and a solid color.I don't really care about the competition records of the parents of the horse, just makes it look better. I won't mind if the horse has Appaloosa Blankets,Snowflakes or whatsoever, I just tend to like solid colors more and I will pay lesser for spotted horses. I also do not pay attention to the horse's competition records unless it had been 100% trained(or almost) and scores 0% in every competition it has been entered in unless it's a Belgian entered in a race.

3.Hmm,I sell horses with competing records from 10k to 50k like, fully trained horses?
For horses I don't need anymore,I can sell for 1$. I rarely sell horses though, except for my TBs in the other account.I sell them from 1$ to 8k.Most around 2.5k to 5k.

4.6 figures.

1. Color, unusual characteristics that I like, neutral to positive comments in BR

2. If it has a color I want plus the BR comments, I'd pay up to 100K as long as it's a younger horse, if it has only BR comments maybe up to 50K, and just a good color would be 15K max.

3. If I sell my horses, they are usually a line of horses that are not related to most of the other lines, have good/proven show records, great BR and 40K+ HGP, plus they are all fully trained, so I tend to make mine pricey at somewhere between 80-200K. If it's a horse I'm breeding on the way through a project and is just something someone wants but isn't trained, ect, then usually 1.5K - 60K depending on what terms the other player and I have worked out.

1. I look at the breeder's report, conformation when I have premium and looks when I don't, breed, and color (I prefer non LP), in that order. For breeder's report/conformation I am favoring racing stats.

2. I will pay up to about $50,000 for what I want in the aforementioned list. I don't care about their competition record because I can get one myself. I don't look for a trained horse when going through the market since I can train the right horse myself, but if I find the perfect horse and it is already trained I will happily pay tens of thousands extra to not have to deal with the time investment to training myself.

3. I usually price around $500 to $1000, just high enough to give the horse some value and ward off players that play a week and quit but low enough to actually sell in a reasonable time.

4. Very low 7's. I stopped playing over the summer so the pasture mowing value drop was a surprise and will make it unlikely I hold 7's for very long.

1. I look for a high HGP, I prefer it to be over 60K but I also look at the conformation since there are surtain traits I value higher than others, I for instance prefer short backs and Ribb Cage/ Depth of Flank to be deep aswell as an uphill build.
I have a soft spot for colours that include Silver, Dun and are Black based and I am not so found of really light colorations bit it is a secondary to performance traits.
As for the Breeders report I prefer golden stats in as many areas as possible but I am usually not so interested in Speed since I rarely focus on events that require alot of it or intelligence since all my own stock already has golden intelligence.

2. I am willing to pay up to 1 million for a horse I really like, Training I can do myself unless the horse is getting up in years so that I do not put much focus on.
An older stallion will be worth more than an older mare to me since it can sit in my other account and be breed extensively regardless of age.
I am not so interested in breeds per say but if there was to pop up a paso fino unrelated to my own I could see myself spending a great deal of cash on said horse.
Performance records I usually look more closely at when using and outside stud so is not a huge factor when I am looking to buy.

3. I usually only sell those I think will have a good chance in competitions and I tend to train them fully before sale so my prices range from 20,000-100,000 or so depending on variables like if it has training and or if it has done well in the showring so far, on occassion I sell untrained foals that I think could be valuable to someone else and those typically go for around 2500-10000 or so

4. 7 figures and rising thanks to local shows and regular shows

1. Generally their breed, and how well they fit the breed book evaluation of whatever I'm trying to create. Sometimes I just scroll through the market and look for horses that catch my eye though or look for mixed breed horses that have decent stats (no reds, max 1 neg. comment). It's honestly a crapshoot what I'm looking for depending on the week

2. Untrained up to 10k, trained up to 50k. Average horses (those with ~35k GP) I expect to pay around 1k

3. Untrained, average horses get priced at 1000; trained horses w/o titles anywhere between 5-10k depending on GP; trained with at least one championship around 25k but can be more depending on breeding capabilities and age. If the horse is grade or a mixed breed that isn't useful for a breeding program, I usually reduce the price.

4. 7 figures and always rising!

1. At the moment, I'm trying to recreate my breeds from scratch (to fulfill the quests and also to bring in new blood). So, although I don't normally buy too many horses, I keep an eye on the rare breeds that feed into my breeds. But if I do look to buy the "finished" breeds, the first thing I check is the COI (I know it doesn't mean anything now, but it's just one of my personal goals). After that, I generally pass over horses with LP. Next box to check is HGP (preferably over 40k). Greens/Golds are next. Training is completely unimportant to me (for now).

2. I'd pay 50k for a nearly-perfect horse (according to my breeding goals), but that's the top end. My usually price point is closer to 10k for a good horse.

3. I normally only sell horses that I have zero use for, and I generally want them to sell very quickly (these are normally foundation horses that I've already got a good foal out of). So I usually sell from 500-1k, but will reduce prices if they stick around for more than a day.
