Post by spottedleaf10 »

This would be a good idea, but not many countries apart from the US and Canada celebrate Thanksgiving or understand what it's truely about. Many players probably don't feel a connection to or with Thanksgiving. If we had Thanksgiving costumes, it would be quite logical to also have costumes for holidays from other countries, like Sinterklaas, Easter, etc. (Sinterklaas is a dutch holiday, btw.)

I totally agree with you Lila25172, I'm from between Central and Southeast Europe and I don't know what is the point of Thanksgiving. Also in my countrey we don't celebrate Halloween in the same way as people in US, for example we don't dress in costumes, but we do cut faces in pumpkins :) In my countrey we dress in costumes only to celebrate Shrovetide and have Shrovetide carnivals to chase away winter, snow and cold weather. :D

Thanksgiving is just a harvest holiday where you eat a bunch of food before winter. For some reason it's a big deal in the US.
HWO is made in Canada, so we put in a few holiday things that we are familiar with and thought would be fun. I'd like to add more stuff from around the world, but I want to get it right and not accidentally offend anyone.

I'm sorry, I didn't think of that, you're completely right!

For those that might not know, Thanksgiving is supposed to represent the time that the colonists were saved from hardship by the help and aid of the natives (loosely described, and offered from primary school teachings). To celebrate Thanksgiving is to celebrate the meaning of remembering to come together to benefit as a unit.

There are many ways that people and societies around the world celebrate the 'unit', although yes, most of them don't do so as an actual, stand-alone holiday. But when offered in such a way, I'm sure many of you can make connections to Thanksgiving now. :)

It is a celebration of continued life, of the struggle to survive and succeed and also of the strength of the family unit (extended family unit, family and friends, local community, etc).

It’s kinda cool to see all the different traditions and holidays. We should have a forum topic for that.
