Trying to Breed an Exmoor

Post by Olivvia »

Hi there.

I'm trying to breed an Exmoor pony. I have a Tarpan stallion and a Przewalski's Mare but the foal's breed only appears as Przewalski x Tarpan. Why is it not an Exmoor?

Mare: OVI Buttermilk

Stallion: OVI Braeburn

Colt: OVI Apple Cider

Your foal is not bulky enough.

So everything has to be labelled as "Good" for him to have "Exmoor" as his breed? How could I accomplish that?

Not everything. Build can be red and it doesn't matter. The rest has to be right, though.

How could you accomplish that?
Well, you could find a different stallion, for example. Or you could breed your stallion to a grade mare or a mix mare that's equal parts breed A and breed B (neither of these breeds can be Tarpan) with the right body type. This may give you a half Tarpan with the right body. You can then use this half Tarpan to breed it to your Przewalski mare and have a better chance for an Exmoor.

Keep breeding the Przewalski and the Tarpan. You can also look up any Tarpans available for stud if the Tarpan you own isn't working out. It may take one more try, or even a couple of more tries, but you'll get an Exmoor Pony eventually.

Since you're only 2.5% off of what you need, this same pair just _might_ give you a foal that fits the standards. The standard is somewhere between these two, so it's not impossible.
