Does Hip Angle influence Tail Carriage?

Post by Wingless Flight »

Does a flatter hip result in higher tail carriage? I've been noticing my Arabs' tails are becoming more low set *again*. I'm focusing on getting a bit more slope in their hips, but there seems to be some variation in tail carriage with horses that have the same hip slope.

I'm not sure if the high set tail just tends to breed out or if the slope of the hip has something to do with it. Does anyone else have some experience with this?

I don't think so, but I've never done a study on it. I think some of it could be optical illusion.
But I would first think that it's just the luck of the draw. By selectively favoring your hips, you're also accidentally favoring a different tail carriage.

By adding in some fresh blood with the correct tail carriage you want, you should be able to negate some of the effects.

However... maybe they are linked. I have seen some very unusual tails on different horses on here. Perhaps they're linked at a fundamental but nominal position where in order to keep a tail set on one style of hips versus it's opposite, you will need correspondingly stronger or weaker tail-set genes than it's opposite.
