Until registries are in place the Breeding Communities forum will be for players to work together towards creating or improving their favourite breeds.
Forum rules
Each breed may have only one topic. The first post in the topic is to be informative. It should help explain the breed, and breeding goals; advice on how to select mares and stallions; and links to ideal Stallions available for breeding.
Keeping a directory of breeders working on the same goal is also helpful.
All new threads must be approved.

The Galloway Improvement Association

Post by dulsinayae »

I had thought that it would be neat to breed my own thoroughbred. I got as far as breeding my first Galloway and... well, my goals have changed. Why? Because they are, to be frank, adorable.

Galloways are currently extinct, due mostly to crossbreeding because they were just THAT useful to develop other breeds. They were hardy, tough, brave little ponies that were preferred cavalry horses and that legacy lives on in the Clydesdale, Thoroughbred and Fell pony, among others.

They aren't that hard to breed either! All you need is an Exmoor X (Exmoor x Friesian), wait a little bit to get lucky and you too can have one of these plucky little guys. I am currently on an improvement project to try and increase the HGP of the breed in general, which should also serve to help new breeders of the Galloway's progeny. To do this, I have bred one of my Galloway mares to a nice Thoroughbred and will breed that progeny back to my other Galloways until I get far enough out in generations to have a pure Galloway again, but hopefully one that is fit for performance.

If you'd like to join me, I'd be thrilled to get some more help and to expand the breeding pool. While COI might not mean anything now, I hate the thought of it meaning something later and having the breed be so badly inbred that they aren't functional. If you are really serious, I might even be willing to sell you a Galloway mare, with the understanding that the offspring would not be rehomed and instead used to increase the gene pool.

There are currently two active Galloways at stud with reasonable stud fees.

My own, Tally Cat (COI 16%, HGP 39k, one gold): http://www.horseworldonline.net/horse/profile/2000918
Proxy (COI 0.32%, HGP 38.9, one gold) http://www.horseworldonline.net/horse/profile/1771047

Please let me know if you want to be included!

I would be interested in buying a few Galloways if you are able to breed them with feathering.

I know it's not ideal, but I am breeding Clydesdales and I'm hoping to have more foals that develop feathering.
