How do I have a solid horse
Colt in question

His parents have both tabino (I think) markings so how did he come out as just a roan ??

Tobiano works a lot like Lp (Leopard Complex), whereas you need both the switch to see the patterns that the horse has and also the patterns themselves.Blue-Jayy wrote:Colt in question

In your case, it's highly likely that your foal has the patterns, but that both parents only carry one copy of the switch and nether of those parents passed their switch onward (25% chance of that happening). If you breed this foal, you'll probably get offspring that show coat patterning similar to the grandparents (this foals parents).
The more unlikely scenario, considering the extent of the coat patterning that both parents have, is that your foal simply inherited NONE of either of the parents. I don't know if that's possible and I don't know how much chance that might be. But since we don't know everything about tobiano, I have to offer that it might be possible. In this case, it's likely that this foal did inherit the switch gene, but no patterning and in this case, your foal can still have patterned offspring, even with a non-patterned horse, by passing on the switch gene to a horse that has the patterning genes but not the switch.
In both cases, crossing to patterned or non-patterned can result in patterned offspring. So your foal is not exactly a dud for the breeding shed, simply an unknown to exactly what he carries.
