Looking For Studs: No breed requirements

Post by CarouselCowgirl »

I am looking for studs to cross with my Andalusians and Percherons, to improve different aspects of their breeder's reports. Breed doesn't matter, though I am looking for some specific traits:

Stud type 1 that I am looking for:
  • Medium Pony, Medium Heavy Pony, or Heavy Pony type
Must have green or gold ratings in at least one of the following: strength, stamina, tempo, or intelligence
Must at least have a breeder's report of average in strength
Would prefer he have a naturally short tail
Would prefer no dun, champagne or leopard complex
Stud type 2 that I am looking for:
  • Medium or Medium Light Horse Type
Must have a green or gold rating for at least one of the following: strength, movement, agility, or balance
Would prefer a long mane and tail
There are certain conformation traits I prefer too, but there are too many to list. If you have a stud that meets these requirements though, let me know and I'll take a look!

Sometimes I'm able and willing to do "homework" for other players, and come up with some specific recommendations. Today I feel helpful but meta, so am offering some suggestions. Please forgive me if you've already tried these approaches.

-- Stallions listings -- Studs with ID numbers in the 300K and 400Ks (probably in the first 10% of pages for any given breed) are more likely to have golds, greens, and higher HGPs.

OTOH, the recently-bred are also more likely to have Leopard complex, which was introduced to Shetland Ponies and Tarpans in the 180ks. Dilutions turn up in many breeds and crossbreds; maybe they are commoner in HWO than IRL. There is no "exclude" sort for Color, and accurate color descriptions seem to be in the minority anyway.

-- Rankings (the top 20 in competitions) can be sorted by:

• Gender -- now you can see successful stallions, many of whom are posted!

• Discipline -- for the Horse types you want, consider stallions who are good at Driven Dressage, English under saddle, or Western events. Medium to Very Heavy Ponies are often successful in Log Pull, Marathon Driving, and Obstacle Driving. Noting the breeds can give a general indication of which of those work best for which activities (but then, there are atypical examples of everything).

• Breed -- like the Stallions pages, the default is all breeds; unlike the Stallions search options, it does not include "Grade". At the moment, Breed rankings include crossbreds (and Parts and Halfs and Mixes); the breed that is indicated first on the Profile is the one the horse will be listed in. For example, there is a (Belgian x Forest Horse) who appears in Overall, Log Pull, and Belgian rankings.

-- Forum topics: Farm Logs and Breeding Communities.

Thanks for your patience if you've read this far! Good luck. And thank you for sponsoring some great shows! :D

Thank you, Scythian. I actually decided to wait on the pony type studs, and focus on the horse types.

I had actually already done the first method you mentioned, looking through the stud adds for higher ID #s. I was able to find 4-5 studs!

I will try the other methods as well. I am still looking for one more stud, with green or gold movement.

Thanks again!

Hi CC,

I've got a couple high-GP Appaloosa stallions up for stud. Take a look and let me know if any interest you. If there's a stallion on my farm not currently offered who interests you let me know about that too, we can work something out.

i have a palomino stallion that sound like what you want other than he has a medium tail if he is not what you want or is too pricey than let me know
