how does your horse retire? or does it automatically just happen?

As in "Retired Horse Page"? This is a euphemism for "dead." The computer decides this, usually when a horse ages somewhere past 20 years. The horse simply vanishes from the barn or pasture where it was, and this does not cost the player anything in time, HWO$, or Pony Tokens.

How you know: it's one of those notices that appear when you advance one turn (in the upper right hand corner of the page just under the snoring moon). It says something like "[Name of Horse] has gone on to greener pastures at the ripe old age of 21 y 2.1 months". There is also a message (little brown envelope at the upper left, near the HWO logo). Click on that and you get the same.

The horse's profile page then becomes the "Retired" page and loses some information, most noticeably the Breeder's Report.
