Most things one learns as one goes along; but here is what I can think of:
Train a good horse and compete, you can get plenty of good foals in the market quite cheap. Alternatively, look at this topic: viewtopic.php?f=8&t=5781
If you give a horse feed, make sure that nothing turns red, otherwise the horse won't get all the food it needs.
PS: when you train a horse, try to use the longest time possible (select the 30 minute option instead of the 5 minute one) and I usually just use the lunge as the don't get fatigued for quite a while.
