Weird Pale Mare

Post by Jbirrd »

Mystique Abounding

Anyone have an idea? As a foal she looked like a miniature Perlino but the darker legs, nose, mane and tail faded as she grew up. Not in a Grey way as you can see she's well past the point she should be starting to really fade out. She doesn't have Champagne. Definitely has snowflake.
I went through this lovely resource that usually helps me out in confirming colours but nothing is a match in it: http://www.student.itn.liu.se/~tovba357/WHO/Coats.html
Or the post it originates from: viewtopic.php?f=13&t=2158
Though there are pieces missing. This mare's colouring is driving me up the wall

This mare actually is graying perlino (graying gene + 2 creams on a bay base). In her one year photo she does have the "graying rings" around her eyes. The reason she does not have graying veins around her legs is due to the type of graying she has. There are many different patterns that can appear due to the greying gene, and it seems that hers lacks the vines. Since she also has snowflakes, the greying could be paired with Lp varnish, which is similar to greying in the way that it lightens the coat, but is connected to appaloosa markings.

Also, just a side note, champagne would not have gradual effects. Once the adult coat comes in (unless greying or Lp varnish comes into play) the coat stays the same.

Correction - champagne can cause gradual lightening as a horse ages. It's not as strong as gray or Lp, but it does occur. I'll use this horse and this horse as examples. (Neither horse has Lp in their pedigree.)

Here is the first horse at 3:

And again at 10:

Here is the second horse at 3:

The second horse is much more apparent, but both horses are affected by champagne fading. Not all champagne horses will fade, but the effect is fairly common, especially in certain bloodlines.
