Weird Foals

Post by Revenant »

Okay, so her parents were gold champagne and metallic smoky grulla. She looks like an amber cream tiger eye, but there's a chance she's an amber cream dun TE. Is there any way to tell the difference? I realize this is a pretty rare color combination.

CP Night Star

I also have an interesting upcoming colt, CP Socials. I think he may be a smoky cream grullo. http://www.horseworldonline.net/horse/profile/433759
I'll have to wait and see, but he should be a looker.

On my monitor, both Night Star and Socials appear to have light brown, almost gold, eyes (irises). Night Star's muzzle seems to be freckled, so she could be amber champagne with a further dilution (maybe pearl?). Socials has a pinkish muzzle but not freckling. Neither is a dun -- no darker stripe along the topline. They are both beautiful and may yet show color changes.

No pearl, just a cream. My guess is she's just an Amber Cream (1 Cream + Champagne on a bay base). And I agree with Xant'hippe that she's not a dun, based off of what has been stated.

As for the colt, he's still a bit young so it's hard to tell. Smoky cream would be as good a guess as any tho. You'll probably have to wait and see.

This guy is an Amber Cream Dun:

If you look closely, you can make out a greyish cast on his coat (most obvious on his face) and faint dorsal stripe on his back. I cannot make out Dun on Night Star.
I suspect Socials to be smoky black pearl dun...

Oops! The link led me to a -mare- who is an Amber Champagne (not dun) 341364 Twilights Snow Haven.

Another factor is that when I look at Gallery images I see them with a black background. This makes the dorsal stripe difficult to impossible to distinguish. I wondered how early a young horse would show a stripe, but galleries won't help.

I have two newborn fillies with dun dams; neither is showing a dorsal stripe yet. The sire is a dilute (brown cream?). I cannot be sure about them yet either!

Agreed, Xant'hippe. I don't see dun either on that one.

I've come to decide that dun on champagne can be really difficult to distinguish. Take these two sisters, for example.

Whistle has dun...

While Whisper doesn't...

They look really similar, but they aren't the same. And then there's their other sister who is also a champagne with a dun that is incredibly difficult to see...

Although I do admit that the sooty (nor grey for that matter) probably doesn't help. x'D

Idk, I don't think so. I think that's just the sooty. I should've taken a picture of her before the sooty set in, because she was certainly not dun before that.

She had a dun foal. Agreed.

Although I do wonder, if she is dun then perhaps the stripe doesn't set in till really late? But if that is the case, I do have a sneaky suspicion about duns on champagnes that I will have to investigate before I say out loud. x'D

Also I see a very faint line on the other guy, but at that point I'm not even sure if that's a dun or if my eyes aren't playing tricks on me because it's really light. And, you can't go by the color of it either because Amber creams can lightly tint like that without having dun even in the family.

I give up. Nyraeia is the champagne dun expert now. lol

Thanks everyone for the help. :) I'll have to update the thread as they grow older so we can see what colors they truly are. :o

So the going idea is that CP Night Star is an amber cream TE (A- Ch- Crcr dd E-) and CP Socials is either a smoky cream grullo or smoky pearl grullo (aa chch CrCr D- E- or aa chch Crprl D- E-)? Think I have those genotypes right, I'm exhausted today lol.
