Until registries are in place the Breeding Communities forum will be for players to work together towards creating or improving their favourite breeds.
Forum rules
Each breed may have only one topic. The first post in the topic is to be informative. It should help explain the breed, and breeding goals; advice on how to select mares and stallions; and links to ideal Stallions available for breeding.
Keeping a directory of breeders working on the same goal is also helpful.

Eriskay Pony

Post by Weaving »

The Eriskay Pony
Information adapted from The Eriskay Pony Society

Breed Standard
The Eriskay Pony stands at 12.0hh to 13.2hh. In winter a dense waterproof coat enables them to live out in the harshest conditions. The predominant colour is grey with the occasional black or bay - no other colours normally occur but other whole colours are acceptable. Their legs are fine, with only a small tuft of hair at the fetlock. Their enjoyment of human company makes them ideal back door ponies, as they were on crofts. Foals are born black or bay and usually turn grey as they mature, a few individuals remain black or bay into adulthood. Eriskay Ponies are immensely strong for their size and are able to carry a light adult with ease.
Temperament
In character they should be active, honest and workmanlike with good temperament. Sensible and intelligent with a pronounced level of confidence and affinity with humans. Eriskays make excellent family ponies, with their human friendly characteristics coming to the fore playing football in the garden with the kids, or working with special needs children as RDA ponies. As well as this Eriskay Ponies can be seen competing in all spheres of equestrianism, excelling in activities such as hunting, dressage, show jumping, show hunter, cross country, pony club eventing, team games, western riding and driving.
History
Modern Eriskay ponies are the last surviving remnants of the original native ponies of the Western Isles of Scotland. Until the middle of the 19th Century they were used as crofters ponies, undertaking everyday tasks such as bringing home peat and seaweed in basket work creels slung over their backs, pulling carts, harrowing and even taking the children to school.
Breed Specification
On HWO Eriskay ponies should be between 11.3hh and 13.1hh, 40 to 60% body size, medium to medium light in build and 60% Horse type to 60% Pony type. Currently I own the only Eriskay ponies available but am very happy to breed, stud and sell to people genuinely interested in the breed.

Stallions Available for Public Use

Morogh is a stunning grey Eriskay pony with minimal snowflake markings to his shoulder. The grey hides a beautiful rich bay colour which he seems to be passing on to his offspring. He has a Genetic Potential score of just over 43,000 and is proving successful in multiple events. He has slightly more height than the standard, standing at 14.2hh, coming from his long, clean limbs with the correct fetlock tufts. Overall he has a compact, athletic conformation, a beautiful head and serious competitive potential. He is available to stud at £8000
Golden Boy is a beautiful traditional grey Eriskay Pony, his grey coat lies over a beautiful palomino, so he has the potential to throw foals with the cream dilution. He has a Genetic Potential score of just over 39,000 and is true to type with a strong and correct conformation. He has a beautiful head with a big kind eye and is available to stud at £5000
Mini Max is a neat little bay dun Eriskay Pony, who has a Genetic Potential score of 40,600. He is true to type with slender clean limbs and a pretty head, delicate head. He exhibits faint primitive markings, which are sometimes passed on to his offspring. So far he has exhibited a tendency to produce fillies over colts. He is available to stud at £5000
Nevis is a true pony type bay dun with blanket and minimal snowflake Eriskay Pony, he has a Genetic Potential score of just over 34,000. Whilst his colour is not accepted by the society, he is a nice stud for appaloosa breeders, carrying both blanket and snowflake genes. He has a balanced conformation and minimal feathering around the fetlock which is desirable. He is available to stud at £4000. Fun fact, he is the first Eriskay Pony to have been bred on HWO.

Horses Available For Sale

Meg is a 12.0hh Eriskay mare, who is silver bay blanket in colour with minimal snowflake to the face and some varnishing. She is of perfect proportion according to the breed standard and is an exceptionally talented broodmare. She is our longest standing breeding mare and has thrown us all of our most useful Eriskay ponies. We will be sad to see her go but it's time she helped improve someone else's lines. She is for sale for the bargain price of £5000
Hamish is small for an Eriskay stallion, measuring just 10.2hh, however what he lacks in height, he makes up for in build! He is a little on the chunkier side so would be ideal for those struggling with ponies that are too light. He is a striking rose grey in colour with a manageable mane and short bobbed tail. He is balanced and intelligent, with a genetic potential of 37.5k. He is available to buy for £3000

Prince is a 12.0hh stallion, who is sooty bay dun with minimal snowflake in colour. He exhibits no primitive markings and the snowflake to his face is ever so pretty. He has a really neat conformation, is well balanced and pleasing to the eye. He has sired only one horse to us, who hugely exceeds his own genetic potential and is a real eye catcher. Prince would be an ideal starter stallion for someone looking to begin their own line, as he has such perfect conformation and a low COI. He is available to buy for £4000.

Jeeves is a 13.1hh rich bay stallion with a well proportioned head and torso. He has a little more length in the leg than other Eriskay Ponies but still boasts a very quiet temperament. He has sired only one horse to us, a filly who exceeds him in genetic potential. We feel he would be best suited to a home where he can be used to begin a new line of Eriskays, however his excellent tempo might make him suitable for low level competitions. He is available to buy for just £4000/

This is lovely. :) I may be able to help. It appears the Eriskay Pony is extremely similar to the Exmoor Ponies I am already breeding. In fact, I bought Bonny since she's a 4* Exmoor. I'm hoping to breed her into my lines for that reason. Lovely little horse. Wrong coloration, but not far off and I can breed out the appaloosa easily enough. If any of my horses would be useful for your program, please let me know. I can also give Bonny back or to another breeder down the road if wanted after I get a couple of foals out of her. ^^

Thanks Revenant. Exmoor ponies are part of the breeding of Eriskay's so that's probably part of it. I'm pretty self sufficient at the moment but if I see a nice pony of yours then I'll drop you a line. And do post on here once you've made use of Bonny cause I can always age her out :)

No biggie. ^^ Once I get my Exmoors nailed down, maybe I can help with the similar Eriskay. I like sturdy children's riding ponies in my barn. Makes me nostalgic for Misty of Chincoteague and such. I'll be sure to let you know how the foaling goes and if you want any of her foals after I'm done with them as well, feel free to tell me. I have a few stallions I think I'll breed her to, but specifically MCh.++ CP Hunting Knife maybe more than once. So might be four or five game years? We'll see. Anyway, I'm excited to see how her foals will be. :3

I've used Hunting Knife a lot in breeding up my line of Eriskays actually! He happened to have a really useful conformation for that!

Awww, glad to hear it. He's one of my favorite pixel ponies of my current generation. <3 His half-sister, Ch.+ CP Impala, is also a great little mare.
