Need a Little Help with some Colors!

Post by KayaineII »

So I've named the colors of everything in this barn that I was reasonably sure of, but the reds are tripping me up. Any opinions on what the rest of these horses are? I just need the base color as I don't add the extra stuff like Varnishing or Snowflakes to the colors in my stables. Although Silver is ok. I.e. I think one of them I would classify as a Silver Palomino, but he was so dark, I wasn't sure.

Hi Kaya!
There's no silver palomino, Silver doesn't show on red based coats :)

Dunalino - correct.

Grullo - correct.

Chestnut.

Silver Dapple/Silver Black - correct. Chestnut-like appearance because of Appaloosa Bronzing.

Silver Bay - also Appaloosa Bronzing.

Red Dun - I agree.

Silver Dapple/Silver Black - correct.

Gold Champagne.

Chestnut.

Bay - Appaloosa Bronzing.

Chestnut.

Chestnut.

Glad to help!

Yep, so when it pops up out of nowhere, it may have been "smuggled in" by a chestnut or palomino or whatever.

Foal picture clearly shows a bay horse (notice the darker mane/tail/legs? Chestnuts are far more red-ish).
Chestnut foal for comparison:

On pic two you can still notice the dark legs and greyish mane, although the legs have been lightened by Appaloosa Bronzing. This makes some black-based Appaloosas look red-based.
This gets a bit more obvious if you compare it to a "real" red-based horse, for example this other one of yours (pic taken at similar age):

His legs are definitely red while you can see a dark "shadow" on Dancer's legs. It's easier to see on the dark gallery background.

Maybe I'll do a small animation tomorrow.

Ah, that makes a lot of sense actually! Thanks! ALso, I'm assuming in this game, we're using chestnut more it seems in place of what I grew up calling sorrel. That might explain why I've been so confused. XD

Chestnut and sorrel are the same colour. I think chestnut is the English term while sorrel is more used in the USA. I've read this:
Sorrel Versus Chestnut
So...is your chestnut really a sorrel? Or is that sorrel really a chestnut? It depends--and it's subjective.

Different breeds use the two terms to describe different genetic variations or shades of color. For instance, draft-horse breeders often reserve the term "sorrel" for chestnut horses with the mealy effect (see "Glossary") superimposed. Other breeds, notably the American Quarter Horse, apply the term based on body shade alone: To them, "sorrel" refers to red or lighter chestnut shades, with or without the mealy effect.

A third approach, though rare, is to use the term "sorrel" to describe a light chestnut with a flaxen mane and tail. The common link to the term "sorrel" seems to be its reference to lighter-colored chestnut horses--despite the fact that draft-horse fanciers and Quarter Horse aficionados each use different logic to arrive at that description.

Bottom line? Unless you're into Quarter Horses or draft breeds, "chestnut" may be the term of choice, at least in a generic sense. Check with your breed registry, if applicable. They can tell you what colors they do and don't recognize, so you can most accurately describe your horse's color for registration purposes.

So... it really depends on many factors. I personally use "chestnut" because it's the term I'm more familiar with and the term I like better. If you want to call them "sorrels", you can. :)
