Making money

I was wondering, now that my horses are making a lot less money in the local shows, what are some other good ways of getting cash while I try to improve my horses?

Good question. Mowing doesn't seem to get you good money either. Grass is worth less overall as a food source and ponies even need feed, which seems somewhat unrealistic maybe? I dunno, my friend has Arabians that eat mostly grass/forage and A+ quality hay. I suppose we do live in a sub-tropical climate though! Hmm.

Competitions may be a good option, I'd try those. Studding remains a way to get money. I'd suggest also doing a herd cull, if possible, with the new horse genetic potential stat. Get rid of unneeded horses for your breeding plan(s) so you're feeding less.

Any other ideas, community?

If you have smaller ponies then they eat less and you can have more and still enter shows, as well as having extra grass to mow it. Works for me at least haha.. too well actually

if your horses have decent natural stats, you can stud your stallions

The horses seem to be able to win in much higer levels at the locals, which give more prize money. So I still go for the locals.

Regarding needing feed, my turkmenes/arabians don't unless they are growing (then I feed them oats, that's cheap). I think the trick might be to keep your pastures at 100% quality by not filling them up with horses.

My problem with mowing is the time it takes. Hardly worth it considering I could compete in a local which gives half the money and a chance to get tokens/days.

Another possibility may be to sponsor competitions, depending on whether you have studied the show/event management courses. There are hundreds of existing shows already, and there are too many Level 1s already. Still, with the new sorting available, you could see what's over- and under- represented. Observations: Western shows between 1 and 10 have comparatively few, especially in Barrel Racing, Cutting, Pole Bending, and Reining. Endurance is SATURATED.

To add on what Xant said, I don't think there aren't near enough low level (or any level really) Marathon and Obstacle driving shows. I certainly would need them, but I'm not sure how in demand they are. Could be a good thing to test out though.

There are more Marathon and Obstacle competitions now than there were a month ago; sponsors have been stepping up. That's mostly good.

I will repeat my displeasure with high entry fees here, particularly at levels 1-6. Competitions either Xan or I sponsor have low fees, typically $20-25, so we practice what we advocate.

There is justification for some high fee--high reward shows at Level 10. And we'd like to see levels beyond 10 for Master and Supreme Champions as well.
