I would consider him a red roan with a blanket pattern.

That's not roan, it's just varnishing. Roan would have been visible on the foal pics.

The varnish comes from him having the LP gene. Any snowflakes or patterning could cause some varnishing. To what extent, well it varies depending upon the breed. Some are more prone than others.
