Re: Allow only breeder to change the horse's name

Post by Hawkeye »

I believe every horse registered should already have any kind of immutable identification. Doesn't need to be the name, but for example, i've bred one Lusitano 5 stars, i will call him "HLN Firefly", the HLN would be immutable (prefix), but the "Firefly" will be the mutable name. However, on the register, there will be a bunch of information about him, including the registered name "Firefly" AND the register names of his parents, so if the new owner change the name to "Doomsday" ou whatever, you can still see his original name "Firefly" on his register. It would be great for the breeder because even with a new name, she can just check the register and there will be all the original information.

Most registries require the person who original registered the horse to approve any name changes.

I don't think that would really work on here, tho argent. People go inactive for a while or stop playing all together.

Kind of the point. I think changing registered names defeats the purpose of even having them. Maybe allow unbred horses or horse without champion titles to have their names changed for a fee, if they absolutely must be changeable.

It seems that the easiest solution to this is to give the "unchangeable prefix" as an option. Having twenty barn names to keep track of in the registries would be tedious. Also I personally would be frustrated if I could not change troll names, or just silly ones like "Cutie Pie" or "Pretty Stud", of horses I find in the market. I hate prefixes on my horses because it makes the name feel cluttered, but I never change them out of respect for the breeder who put it there if I purchase a horse with one, since I know it is a big deal to other players. I am just happy with my breeder's credentials showing up on the horse profile page and the top horses page. I hope that breeder information is kept for the memorial pages.

I could also see being able to change names as a premium perk.

I know this is an old thread, but a thought occurred to me while reading through this. ^^;

I'm not a big fan of permanent names from a buyer's standpoint, either. However, I'm more of a breeder, anyways, so it just means breeding til I get an ideal foal and selling/letting the other horse age to death. >.>

Hehe, anywho! My thought: barn names/nicknames. If and when permanent names become a thing, allow players to give horses barn names that if given, will appear in profiles and show alongside OR instead of the registered/permanent names. In pasture/stable view, as well as when breeding, maybe show the barn name below the permanent name. That way breeders can remain proud and buyers have some freedom, too.

Heck, my horse in real life has a silly registered name (inspired by her sire and dam, of course), but we all just call her Ivy. :3

I highly agree.
This would be great! (Another great addition for people who are VERY protective about their lines like me).

I agree with the name thing. I would also like to be able to add Prefix or Suffix if you want, so you can see by just a look at the name what breeder it is from. As for me, I always name my horses with "Hed" as a last name. Although it is very frustrating when people change the names after its being sold.

I see that this subject is from 2015 and then says its going to be fixed but when is that actually going to happen as it is 2023 now? :)

I feel like only having the breeder change the whole name would kind of mess up things. Yes, having a prefix/brand being unchangeable to buyers would work, but that's another suggestion for another time. Some players may mistakenly, say for instance, use an appropriate word that is inappropriate to another player based on religion, race, or even sexuality. Say a buyer wants the horse, but knows the name is unchangeable, so is hesitant. Yes, having a slur in your horse's name shouldn't be a big deal, but we should respect others regardless of their beliefs, etc.

I sort of agree. I like to change horse's names if I have consent from the previous owner and if they have some stupid name like Cinderella or Spiderman. But yes, it is annoying to have your horses name changed. Maybe write in the horse's comments DO NOT CHANGE NAME! I also like to brand my horses to keep track of them.
