Cream/Pearl mix? Please help!

Post by horsesfurever »

Mieczyslaw

So, I've been digging in his pedigree trying to figure him out, but I'm still really confused. My best guess is cream and pearl on a black base, plus Lp and tiger eye? Thanks in advance.

The base is correct. Black. Plus there is silver (that's where the dapples are coming in. Yes,there's tiger eye and Lp.

I'm not immediately seeing any strong signs of pearl in his history. What I'm trailing back to is creams. Is there a particular ancestral horse you're questioning? Can you link it so I can follow what you're thinking?

Right now I see a double cream with black and silver, all attributing to the bright, yellow color.

I'm really just questioning everything on his sire's side. There's a whole lot of dilutions, and they don't look familiar to me. I've dealt with double creams before, but these guys look like they've got something different going on. When he was first born, I looked into some foal pictures on his sire's side, and I think I did find something similar?
Here she is:
° Sandstorm °

Looking into her pedigree, she does look like she is a double cream with silver, but what confuses me with both of them is the yellowish coloring, which is kind of where I started thinking about the possibilities of pearl. I've worked with plenty of horses with double cream on a black base, and their shade of yellow is darker, almost like a yellow-brown. Does that mean that the brighter yellow is due to the silver?

That was way longer than I intended it to be  I really hope all that makes sense!

:D Putting thoughts to paper... or in this case reply... helps to flesh it out both in your mind and in those that are reading it. So it being longer, isn't necessarily a bad thing. ;)
Silver will change the coat coloration on a double cream, just like it does on a basic black.
Follow this line of reasoning:
When you have a basic black and you add the silver gene, you suddenly get a horse that for all appearances suddenly looks like a black with dun. So anytime you add the silver gene to a black base, no matter the other combination of genes, it will always lighten and brighten that coat. By using the silver gene, the strongest pseudo-whites are often black horses (and also chestnut), they rarely have other marring to their coats except the occasional dapples.

Sandstorm's dame is a silver dapple grullo and if you look at her sire, this boy:

And look at the dame and that sire's foal pictures, they appear identical. So seeing that he came down from a pseudo-cream, it appears that Sandstorm's dame is also a cream carrier.

But... now here's where it gets a little ironic. This line does go all the way back to this horse:

Which produced a pseudo-white and can only do that when paired with another pseudo-white if he's a carrier of a dilute gene. But after going through some 7 generations back through there, though I do have a sneaking suspicion of a pearl in that line, I see a lot of base colors, a LOT of blacks that are also graying and the occasional cream.
So though there was once pearl in the line (way back in that area), only the cream was transferred down and looking at Sandstorm, though I see no indicators of it, I think she is also affected by the dun gene.
So, yes, something is going on beyond the double cream on black. Silver is shifting the color and giving a 'pearl' look but it's more likely the pairing with silver and perhaps also pseudo-style dun.

For reference, this is a silver dappled black pearl, likely with cryptic dun thrown into the mix.

Yes, I know... the stripes...
Here's an unmarred image:

No problem! It's good that we could get it figured out.
