BCS continuously going up

Post by caters »

My mare Bella
is only fed grass from the pasture. She keeps gaining weight. 134% maintenance and 133% training as far as energy is concerned.

She started BCS 3: Thin and now she is BCS 9: Extremely Fat.

As far as I know, that is not good. My pasture has 21.3 kg of grass.

Shouldn't my horse be more around BCS 5: Moderate to BCS 7: Fleshy?

I am training her at least once every day and the rest of it goes to shows.

My stallion is BCS 3: Thin and has only been trained once.

Both are Arabian horses and my stallion is only .1 hands taller.

So why is the BCS continuously(like every 2-4 days) going up by 1 for my mare?

Horses kept on lush pasture will get fat. Your stallion will get fat eventually, too. They all do. There are two ways to combat this. You can either:

1. Keep the horses in a barn and consciously manage their feed, or

2. Start mowing your pasture and figure out what quality % results in your horses maintaining a decent condition.

Otherwise, your guys will just be blobs and there isn't much you can do about it. :p

Or put more horses on your pasture so they eat all the feed. I don't mind mine fat, they don't do much anyway LOL!
