Type of foal?

When breeding two horses together, is the type of the offspring random or is it determined by the parents type?

I crossed my Tarpan mare with Mongolian stallion and although they are both pony type, the foal is somehow 55% horse type. I wonder if this is a bug or is this the way it's meant to be... Seems very weird and frustrating to me :/

The sire and dam are only just pony type, the sire is actually 50/50 horse/pony. So the foal being 55% horse type isn't that much of a stretch! Do the pairing again and it might go the other way

You can imagine pony/horse type as a scale: 100 % pony <-- 51 % pony - 51 % horse --> 100 % horse.
When breeding, it is genes and luck, so if you have parents of 50 % and 70 % pony, you have a good chance to get approximately 60 % pony but the value can be shifted to 70 % or 50 % or even more, for example if ancestors were horses.

So can there actually be horses that are less than 50% of either pony or horse type...? So I cannot get like, 30% pony type.

No, because if it is 30% pony it will show as 70% horse

Try think of it as a color spectrum: Blue is Horse, Red is Pony, and true Purple is 50/50. Even though shade of Purple may be 30% Red (Pony) it's more natural to describe it as being 70% Blue (Horse) since that's more what is looks like.
