Confused about Baldi
"a Baladi is produced by crossing an Arabian and a North African Barb, but you cannot use it to create a West African Barb, which requires an [Arab x NAB]." is stated in the "Frequently Asked Questions & Getting Started" Guide.
Isn't 'crossing an Arabian and a North African Barb' the same as [Arab x NAB]? Arab is short for Arabian and NAB stands for North African Barb? Then can someone please explain the difference?
What makes the cross a Baladi?
Thank you very much.

What determines what breed the offspring will be is how well it matches the breeds description. If you cross an Arabian that is scored 4* for Baladi with a North African Barb that is also scored 4* for Baladi, you will most likely have a baladi foal.

Re: Confused about Baldi
Addition and correction to the post above:
West African Barb is created by the combination [ Arabian x North African Barb ] x [ North African Barb x Forest Horse ]
Arabian x North African barb can also create a Baladi.
But you can not replace the [ Arabian x North African Barb ] with a Baladi. Thus [ Baladi ] x [ North African Barb x Forest Horse ] will not result in a West African Barb.

Re: Confused about Baldi
Following the recipe doesn't guarantee the foal will be the new breed. From the same Guide:
If the foal doesn't match it will then be [Arabian x North African Barb]Argent wrote: I bred two horses together and didn't get a new breed. What's wrong?
The parents must be of the correct cross or breed to make the breed you're trying to create. You can find the "recipes" for new breeds here. Also, the resulting foal must fall within the parameters of the new breed, which you can test for by buying a breed book. If you evaluate you mares and stallions against a breed standard, you can get a good idea of whether they can produce the new breed you want before you start breeding.

Re: Confused about Baldi
ok thank you both very much. i need to stay away from Baladi.

Re: Confused about Baldi
Just to be clear, Baladi is just an example used in the guides. The above information is relevant for creating any new breed from their recipe. But if/when you want to give that side of things a go, Baladis are probably a good breed to practice with; the breed book is cheap, and I think I had a harder time not getting Baladi foals when breeding NABs and Arabians. Exmoors are another easy one that comes to mind.

Re: Confused about Baldi
As an example: a NAB x Arab cross, taller than 15.3 hh (mature size) will not be Baladi. Also one that is smaller than Baladi or has the wrong body size or type.

Re: Confused about Baldi
There are five simple breeds: Akhal-Teke (Arabian x Turkmene), Ardennais (Forest Horse x Belgian), Baladi (Arabian x North African Barb), Exmoor Pony (Przewalski Horse x Tarpan), and Ob (Forest Horse x Przewalski Horse).
To get the desired result, you'll need to balance traits -- if the Arabian is a little too tall for a Baladi, the NAB needs to be a little too short to compensate.
Also as mentioned, you need exactly what the recipe says. For a Kathiawari, you DO need a Baladi and you also need a not-Akhal-Teke (Arabian x Turkmene).
The last step to a Thoroughbred is crossing an [Akhal-Teke x Galloway] with a not-Baladi [Arabian x NAB].
Now I bet you're confused about even more!

Re: Confused about Baldi
Oh, and if you miss making a Kathiawari it will be described as "Half Baladi".

Re: Confused about Baldi
ok, so Baladi is made of a particular set/range of qualifications within the crossing.
Is there much use for a Baladi?
are they worth breeding a good strain?
Thank you.
