Confusion with this fella's coloration

Post by britesidefarm »

Ive been having some trouble coming up with this guy's coloring. His dam was a silver dunskin with some bronzing while his sire was a normal buckskin with gray. I thought at first he could be a dunskin, but that idea went away as soon as his mane grew out and showed the same color as his base.

Actually, this guy is just dunskin with a blanket and tiger eye. His sire was greying dunskin with tiger eye, and his dam was dunskin with a blanket and tiger eye. The silver that you thought was coming out in his dam was actually varnish, which is very common and is associated with appaloosa markings like blankets. This is also know as varnish roan (not to be confused with normal roan that is not connected to appaloosa markings). The lightness of his mane and tail is due to some early effects of varnish, which is also why his legs got lighter.
