Struggling with this mare, varnishing/greying??
Here she is!

I'm having a bit of trouble working her out, when she was a foal I thought she'd be black with the white patterning, but she's grown up a strange grey-ish colour that doesn't look like varnishing to me...
If you click on her then I do have a photo of her younger self if that's any help.

She's Black Blanket (possibly Smoky Black)
The grey-ish-ness comes from Varnish, every horse with LP varnishes (if that's a word), some faster than others.

Re: Struggling with this mare, varnishing/greying??
I would guess that the greyish tone is bronzing.

I've a lot of horses with LP and they have all varnished but it looks so different on them to on her. Her's is very smooth all over, so I'm erring on Argent's side, the only thing is, I've never seen a horse with bronzing on here before?Aela wrote:She's Black Blanket (possibly Smoky Black)

Where I am not 100% certain, I still believe she is just varnishing. Especially now when she's older :)Weaving wrote:I've a lot of horses with LP and they have all varnished but it looks so different on them to on her. Appaloosa Bronzing or colour shifting is described as making the horse look chestnutty (or like bronze) both in real life and on HWO, which the mare does not.
Varnish is more extreme in some breed and more subtle in others, as the HWO-Appaloosa-post states.

Now I've seen her again a bit older, she does look like she's varnishing, but I'm almost positive there's something else going on there too. I have a tonne of black LP Belgians and they seem to varnish out more like the one I've posted below. Her legs and spots have remained very black whilst the rest greyed out, whereas Enaults is very brown...Aela wrote:Where I am not 100% certain, I still believe she is just varnishing. Hmmmm, I see that...
She just doesn't look that much bronzed out, I would expect it to be a bit more extreme and not the same on the whole body. Honestly, I'm a bit lost
Perhaps its just shade, or perhaps a weird effect of the fact that she might carry Cream underneath everything else?
Just to throw out some theories

Cream is possible... You're the colour master usually, so I think I'll go with that!Aela wrote:Hmmmm, I see that...

Arrggh not too sure about thatWeaving wrote: Cream is possible... You're the colour master usually, so I think I'll go with that!

Spotted (Appaloosa) horses and Pearl combos are my weak spots
But thanks, I absolutely love these colour problems

Cream is not possible. A black horse will look the same whether is has a single cream or no cream.
She is of course varnishing; she's an appaloosa. But I haven't seen varnish change the tone of a horse's base color like that - typically is just adds roaning.
As for bronzing making a horse "chestnut," that is not the case. Bronzing dilutes the base color, and dilution can come in varying degrees, especially when you factor in the varying base shades in the game. This mare could very easily be a lightly diluted bronze on a medium to dark black base (you can't really see the variance in black shades, but the genes are still there).
