Sooty Project At The Carousel

Post by CarouselCowgirl »

Quote from larissar
Sooty Dapples are available in the game right now, and are more challenging than Appaloosas to find.

A Quick Summary:
Sooty Dapples Master Switch (turns on the appearance of dapples on sooty)
- only available in one breed

Sooty Dapples Strength (3 main genes, in same breed as master switch gene)

In order for dapples to appear on Sooty then Sooty must also appear.
Sooty Summary:
- 4 Master Switch genes found in 3 breeds, and very rarely in 4 other breeds
- 4 expression genes (help to determine over what areas of the horse the sooty will appear), found in 3 breeds and very rarely in 4 other breeds)
- 4 strength genes (help to determine how much sooty appears in the areas where sooty has been determined to appear) found in most breeds to varying degrees
- 1 progression gene (helps to determine how quickly the sooty effect will progress, some breeds will appear sooty faster while others could take their entire life for sooty to appear), Fast Sooty found in 5 breeds, while Old Sooty found in all breeds.

Hint: The breed carrying the Dapple Master Switch is one which rarely appears sooty itself. 1 in 4 horses will carry the gene, but it's a Simple Dominant so only one copy is needed. The gene has been in the game since the beginning so it's possible there could be a horse living now with sooty dapples.
I have now embarked on a sooty project alongside my Percherons.

I already know the sooty dapple master switch is hidden in the Turkmenes. Currently I am working on two things:
1. Really dark all-over "fast" sooty Forest Horses.
2. Sooty Dapple "fast" sooty Forest Horse x Turkmene Crosses.

Eventually, I may try crossing my results of these 2 projects with other AC breeds. Or maybe I'll try crossing them into some other breed.

My projects have morphed a bit.

1. Fast sooty dapple forest horses
2. Fast sooty w or w/out dapples turkmenes

I've found a couple FH lines that produce offspring that lay down sooty SUPER fast. Like by the time they are a year old. It appears to be simple dominant, but I am not sure on this. I'd like to breed the trait into Turkmenes.

I am now getting sooty dapple offspring regularly, the dapples coming from 2 different Turkmene sires.

And now, pictures!!!

I've gotten a few with odd dappling. The dapples are mostly on their rears!

Here is an example of a super fast sooty. This is a yearling picture.

I *think* I have one 50% Turkmene who has inherited that trait. Here is his yearling picture:

Here is s super dark super fast sooty. Only 20% Turkmene, but I think she is the darkest I've got! Pictured at 2 years
