Feeding The Herd

Post by DestinoRidge »

Alright so I train all of my horses except for one on a daily basis and have come to find that it's near impossible to keep a few of them at a moderate weight. I'm going to assume that hay and alfalfa hay are poor choices for working horse feed(they are all also in pasture). They keep losing weight even after I set the amount at what the little farm hand suggests. So my question is what's the best feed to put all of these horses on?!?!

Should I just put them all on performance mix?

There's no reason to feed horses on pasture.

EDIT: And all of your horses look fine except for the one extremely fat horse and the babies.

They all look fine BECAUSE they're also being fed along with grass. When I just let the grass grow and don't feed, some get too fat and some don't get enough. So I mow it and keep it anywhere from 30-60 and feed them accordingly.

I would put the horses that get thin in one pasture and let it grow. The fat horses can go into a mowed pasture. I believe the cost of feeding is fairly even across all of the feed options; even though one might cost more, you feed less of it, so the cost is roughly the same as a feed that costs less but you have to feed more of.
