What do you prefer when breeding back to pure

Post by elizabeth1 »

Ok so my question is to the breeders that when you are trying to breed color and pattern in your line do you prefer keeping your males or females for your next generation of breeding.
I have been using my males to breed to my 7+ generation clydesdales I have found that I can breed them earlier and I have more chances to get foals faster i.e. 10 at a time.

just looking for what you guys do/ don't do.... I don't typically cross breed but I wanted to have color in my line of clydesdales.

I don’t usually have a preference, it’s just that usually colts have better stats that I’m looking for (gold strength) so I keep them.

Im not really breeding for stats atm I'm just trying to figure out what I really want lol I'm shooting for horses that look like this. Do you think he has a good shot at producing this in his offspring?

It all depends on if the offspring will have their lp gene 'switched' on. If the offspring does have the lp gene on then, if bred to a solid mare then the offspring will most commonly be a near Leopard which means that he won't have the splashing effect that your horse does on his edges. His edges will instead be smooth and clear.

If he is bred to another few Spot/near Spot (like your horse, with the splashing effect) then you will get a few Spot/near spot

If he is bred to a near Leopard then there are a few chances of the foal being a near Leopard but then again there also chance of your horse being a few spot/near Spot.
