It's a varnish effect. I have some palominos and a buckskin that varnished out almost black/charcoal color. It will probably cover the entire body after a few more years.

The dark patch is not varnish, it's sooty.

The Lp seems to really increase pigment sometimes as they age, quite a cool effect!
