Help with my horse colors

Post by skyler301 »

I currently have 2 horses (Toffee and Solo) who I'm not sure what their colors are. Any ideas? Thanks and also I don't really understand the "Tiger Eye" on horses. Could anyone explain and tell me if my horses have them? Thanks in advance!!!

First things first, you can link a specific horse by opening its profile via the "+" button on your pasture and copying the URL in here.
Example: http://www.horseworldonline.net/horse/profile/208524
We also have this neat little bbcode which copies the most recent gallery pic into the forum. For this to work, you click on the "horse=" button above the text area when you reply to a forum post and put your horse's ID (the same numbers as in the profile URL) behind the "=".
Example: [*horse=208524][/horse] <-- you have to leave the * out for this to work correctly.

I went ahead and did it for you :)

Toffee is amber cream.

Solo is amber cream, too.

So, Tiger Eye:
Simplified, horses have two "spaces" for every gene. For Tiger Eye, there are only two variations for this space: "Tiger Eye" and "not Tiger Eye". They can occur in every combination. So a horse can theoretically be:
Tiger Eye + Tiger Eye
Tiger Eye + not Tiger Eye
not Tiger Eye + not Tiger Eye
Understood? Good!
Double "not Tiger Eye" obviously means that the horse doesn't have Tiger Eye.
Double "Tiger Eye" means Tiger Eye that is visible on every coat colour.
Mixed ("heterozygous") means Tiger Eye is there but invisible except if the horse also has at least one gene for Champagne.

Your horse Toffee has at least one gene for Champagne (a dead giveaway is her freckly nose). But she has dark eyes! If she had one gene for Tiger Eye, it would show on her Champagne coat and if she had two genes for Tiger Eye it would show regardless of coat colour, so we can safely assume she doesn't have Tiger Eye.

So what about Solo? She is also Champagne and has light eyes! So Tiger Eye? Probably not. Solo is still very young, you should wait until the foal is about 1 year old to "diagnose" its colour. If we look at Toffee's foal pictures, we can see that she also had lighter eyes when she was younger but they darkened, this is normal for Champagne coats.

This guy is also amber cream (plus Silver, that's why his mane is grey):

Here's a picture of him at about 1.5 years old:

His eyes are very light and he's older than 1 year, so they probably won't darken anymore. So we can assume he has at least one gene for Tiger Eye.

I hope this helps. If you have more questions, just ask :)

Both horses are the same colour, which is Amber Cream Champagne
= Bay + Champagne + 1x Cream

Both of them will darken out, especially in mane, tail and on the lower legs.

On every colour except Champagne, Tiger Eye will only express as homozygous (=two copies of the gene) It may be carried through several generations without expressing and then suddenly appear and surprise the breeder. Here are some examples of homozygous Tiger Eye horses I randomly found:

http://www.horseworldonline.net/horse/profile/222385

When the horse is also Champagne, heterozygous (=one copy of the gene) will show. However the colour is duller than on homozygous non-Champagne horses. It often takes a light green or brownish shade.

Both responses were so helpful.

So are blue/green eyes tiger eye? They just look blue or green depending on coat color, right? I have both blue and have had green eyed horses.
Thanks!!

Tiger Eyes make the green ones
Blue eyes are a "must" in double cream dilutes and cream/pearl combos. Sometimes they appear very blue, sometimes they are grey-ish like in this guy, who is Cremello Dun. Blue eyes have nothing to do with the Tiger Eye gene:

Okay, I am getting confused again. My "blue" eyes are green eyes on the grulla. It's so pretty. I wish I could make more!!

So they are the tiger which explains why I am getting more tiger eye but no blue
